The Deccan Odyssey runs a selection of seven night itineraries departing from either Mumbai or New Delhi. Perhaps visit the holy cities and ancient cave shrines of the south or visit the Taj Mahal and Rajasthan’s imposing forts in the north. It’s also possible to mix in the wildlife of Tadoba National Park and Tiger Reserve along with Pench National Park – the setting for Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. Or, tie together India’s two greatest cities with a journey up through Gujarat and through Rajasthan, calling at Jaipur’s pink city and Agra’s Taj Mahal along the way. Alternatively, explore Gujarat’s medieval capital, white desert, pilgrim spots and archaeological parks where you’ll find lush green landscapes and 15th century mosques.
Designed to reflect the colourful culture and rich history of the Indian states the train passes through, each elegant private cabin is resplendent in carefully chosen colours. Wood panelling and local handicraft artwork lines the walls while proud khidmatgar ¬– attendants – are on hand to supply you with complimentary beverages. You’ll also find an en suite bathroom along with a personal safe, air-conditioning and a telephone for your convenience. As you rush through deserts and wind through forests, make use of the writing desk – in the Deluxe Cabins – or simply take it all in through picture windows. Cabins are available in double or twin arrangements but, for more space, the Presidential Suite comes with a separate living area.
The Deccan Odyssey has two multi-cuisine restaurants, Peshwa I and Peshwa II, each of which serves a large selection of continental favourites and world flavours as chefs specialise in Indian classics. Feast on rich meat curries in Rajasthan and delicate dosas in the south. And, you’ll dine in style with the second iteration resplendent in burnished gold and lit by atmospheric wall lamps while the first’s muted colours and fine upholstery make for a more relaxed setting.
From fully stocked bars to comfortable lounges, everything has been designed to make your journey as relaxing as possible. Pick up a glass of bubbly from Mumbai Hi and make your way to a comfortable seat to enjoy a book from the on-board library or challenge a fellow traveller to a game of Indian carom. Or, for something more holistic, make use of the spa’s massage services or the gym’s weights and cardio machine. To stay connected, there’s also WiFi and laptops available along with morning papers and magazines delivered with your morning tea. What’s more, each guest is greeted with an arrival kit that comprises stationery items and a glass of wine.
