Family welcome meets high-end luxury in one of the world’s last wilderness settings
Lodges | Natural world | Wildlife
Wrapped in a wilderness of over 32 million acres that’s home to just 1,000 people, Chilko offers perhaps the ultimate in getting away from it all. Think rushing rivers, dense forests and mighty mountains, all animated by a unique collection of wildlife. It’s a family-run affair, so you can expect a hearty Canadian welcome, realised across an all-inclusive spread of fine food, drinks and a full spread of included activities. It’s the kind of place you leave on first-name terms.
These British Columbia remotes are a treasure trove of 200-foot waterfalls, glacier-lined mountains and North America's largest high-elevation lake – Chilko. It’s the dramatic home for everything from soaring eagles to wandering moose and bears. Unsurprisingly, the Chilko Experience is all about getting out there and exploring. Each evening, guests chat to their flawlessly friendly hosts, drawing up an itinerary for the next day based on their interests and abilities. You’ll explore back-wood trails on ATVs, try your hand at Viking axe throwing and fish out giant bull trout from the lake.
Offering some of the best bear watching in North America, the grizzlies are an obvious highlight. However, you’ll also want to hit the waters on a boat ride, kayak or white-water raft. The hiking and horseback riding are excellent.
Then, each day, you’ll return to your accommodation – a delightful collection of timber lodges. Although there’s a variety of standalone options, they’re all immaculately designed, host to period antiques. They’ve even starred on architectural television shows. Throughout, they’re furnished with the likes of private hot tubs, spectacular lake views and canopy beds crafted from 800-year-old Juniper logs. Together, the lodge hosts just 22 guests at any one time.
You’ll also be treated to meals from a professional chef, preparing fine-dining meals in a casual atmosphere. Expect the best in fresh ingredients showcased across classic menus. Then, at the end of it all, you’ll want to retire to the convivial welcome of the bar, where guests swap stories of the day’s activities. The best way to reach it all? Charter plane.
