Today, this late 19th century hotel is better known for designer interiors
Nestled in the Chicago Loop – one of the city’s most vibrant downtown neighbourhoods – the hotel is just a few blocks from Chicago’s newest attraction, Millennium Park. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan, it’s an outdoor gallery of rising and swooping art installations, including Anish Kapoor’s 110-ton silver-drop statue. You’ll also be well located for the city’s theatre district while you can also head a little further afield for the upscale shopping delights of Magnificent Mile or the kitschy glamour of Navy Pier.
The hotel’s Reliance Building was a marvel when it was built at a then staggering 14 stories tall, now it’s listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. To honour the Burnham’s much loved architecture, rooms are furnished with mahogany furniture and lavish damask fabrics while plump floral pillows and lavender accents add a touch of character. En suite bathrooms feature products by Bigelow. For excellent Windy City views, suites look out through oversized picture windows to Millennium Park or Lake Michigan and come with living rooms and deluxe amenities.
The hotel’s restaurant, Atwood, uses seasonal ingredients to produce flavour-forward American cuisine, often with signature, playful touches. Perhaps try a crispy sweetbread tossed in sweet and sour sauce or tuck into sriracha and honey-glazed chicken thighs fried in duck fat. Finish your meal with one of the gourmet dessert options including rhubarb upside-down cake with strawberry-cheese ice cream or mini chocolate Bundt cake with toasted pistachio ice cream.
The Burnham brings a slice of respite from Chicago’s bustle, with yoga mats provided in every room. There’s also complimentary morning coffee and tea and, come the evening, a hosted wine hour in the lobby’s living room. For a faster pace, there’s a 24-hours fitness centre and, soothing your sightseeing aches, there’s a full complement of in-room spa services including organic massage and body treatments.
