Set amid ten acres of subtropical gardens on clifftops that overlook the Atlantic Ocean, Belmond Reid’s Palace is a standard-bearer for excellence, complementing its calm surroundings with superb service and hospitality. It’s a true luxury hideaway, just north of the Canary Islands and flung some 450 miles west of Africa. It’s an exclusive slice of paradise, too, just 36 miles from top to bottom, enjoying a perfectly sunny disposition. Head out to explore it on meandering hikes, idyllic boat cruises or simply on a walk through the hotel’s famous gardens.

With over a century of experience hosting discerning guests, Belmond Reid’s Palace is all old-world charm and sophisticated elegance. Each room is immaculately dressed in dark wood furniture and floral drapes as private balconies and patios feature arresting views over the Atlantic Ocean or the botanical gardens’ verdure. It’s the perfect setting for an al fresco dinner while marble bathrooms offer further luxury. If you’re looking for something extra special, book into one of the indulgent suites. Bright, airy and utterly charming, they’re a true highlight.

From elegant fine dining to casual poolside snacks, the food and drink at Reid's Palace is one of the hotel's major attractions. The famous Ristorante Villa Cipriani is particularly noteworthy, with a menu of refined Italian favourites matched with majestic views across the ocean from its magical hilltop location. If you’d rather something less formal, perhaps opt for a light lunch on the Pool Terrace or take your breakfast in the Garden Room where fresh juices and champagne accompany extensive buffet spreads. The afternoon tea is equally enticing, with finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and homemade pastries matched with a selection of 24 teas and some more champagne indulgence.

Gentle sea breezes, a secluded location and panoramic views make the spa a perfect spot for a relaxing, rejuvenating treatment. There are also three swimming pools overlooking the Atlantic, a fully refurbished fitness room, tennis courts and a boutique selling hand-made souvenirs including the famed Madeira embroidery. Children are also more than welcome at the hotel, and a number of activities are particularly popular with both older and younger guests, including dolphin watching, jeep safaris, levada canal walks and even helicopter flights.

  • Sunrise above the clouds - Jump in a 4x4 jeep from the hotel and be taken above the clouds to watch the sun rise from the 1,818-metre Pico do Areiro, Madeira's third highest peak. The views are sure to take your breath away.

Adding to the magic, a private butler will be waiting to serve you a breakfast of fresh pastries and succulent fruits.

  • The Miracle of Faja Dos Padres - In 1595, a group of Jesuit priests were given a small stretch of land tucked under a towering cliff on Madeira's south coast. Here they produced a heavenly fortified malmsey wine that changed the island’s viticulture forever.

Today you can discover this slice of Eden for yourself. Journey down the cliffs in a cable car, threading through organic gardens. Savour this historic Madeiran wine, alongside a feast of local specialities such as Bolo de Caco, battered black scabbardfish and fried banana.

  • Garden Tour -Step into our own Madeiran fairytale.

Running twice weekly, a guided stroll through the hotel’s subtropical gardens offers an insight into the island’s abundant native flora. Led by an expert horticulturalist, you’ll receive tips to recreate your own slice of paradise back home.

Available Wednesdays and Sundays at 3:30pm.

  • Inspirations by appointment - Join Michelin-starred Chef Luis Pestana and fashion designer Patricia Pinto and work together to create a private atelier like no other.

Meet Patricia in her beautiful garden, browsing through samples of her exquisite work, perhaps even collaborating with her to order a bespoke piece. After, Chef Luis will create you a fabulous feast, where each dish inspired by the colours and patterns of Patricia’s creations.

  • Boat Excursions - Hire one of the hotel boats and set sail for adventure. Cruising the waters is an unforgettable way to uncover the island's history. The hotel has a replica of Christopher Columbus' boat Santa Maria, as well as a host of motorboats. They're ideal for exploring some of the hidden treasures in the local waters
