A remote retreat in romantic Alentejo, the Malhadinha is also within easy reach of Algarve’s beaches. There’s little incentive to venture too far however, with just seven rooms and three suites in a large estate with every sort of experience, from horse riding through vineyards, helping with the wine harvest, fishing on the river that runs through the land, cookery courses and wine tastings. Then there’s a gorgeous infinity pool tiled in blue with lovely verdant views all around, and a striking subterranean spa with a Turkish bath.
The elegant rooms and suites are situated in a restored farmhouse. All have comfortable beds, underfloor heating and spoiling bathrooms, with bowls of fruit beside the tubs. Suites feature extra flourishes, a wood burning stove in one, a freestanding bathtub next to the bed in another. Standard rooms have the advantage of decks leading directly to the pool and gardens.
The restaurant, sited beside the huge vats of the vinery, is a draw in itself. Under the guidance of Michelin-starred Joachim Koerper, the kitchen turns out exquisite dishes based on ingredients from the estate and from the local area. Very traditional Alentejo dishes such as partridge rice can be ordered in advance, otherwise expect the likes of homemade oxtail ravioli with vegetables from the greenhouse or gardens and seafood from the coast. The tasting menus, paired with the estate’s own wines, are a heady experience.
