Location

Hotel Kakslauttanen is located right at the edge of the wilderness along the road to the Arctic Sea. It’s a stone’s throw to the Urho Kekkonen National Park, the largest of Finland’s national parks. The Sami people have inhabited the region for over a century, and the surrounding environment is one of the cleanest you’ll find anywhere in the world. The water is clear and pure and you can drink straight from the stream.

Accommodation

We’d advise that you book into the East village rather than the west. The East is the original side and the West is very much focussed on groups and huge character. There are also glass igloos, through which you can admire the northern lights and the twinkling of the bright starry sky. Two person igloos contain a toilet and there’s also the option of an extra bed. Saunas and showers are available in separate buildings and four-person igloos include their own toilet and shower. The log cabins cater for one to ten people and have a rugged style that fits in with the wild surroundings and all feature entertainment in each cabin.

Dining

There are a few restaurants at the hotel. The combine a la carte menu of the two restaurants spoil guests with local Lappish cuisine and Asian delicacies. Enjoy meals at the traditional Kelo restaurant or the West Village Aurora restaurant that is known for its glass igloo bar. By booking in advance, you can dine in the Santa Claus Celebration House or in the smoke sauna restaurant.

Activities

There is a wide range of winter activities to enjoy at the hotel. These include husky safaris, a reindeer safari, snow tank safaris, snowmobile safaris, horse-riding and sleigh rides, aurora hunting, ice fishing safaris on the lake Inarinjarvi, skiing and ski schools, downhill skiing and snowboarding, and a ride on an icebreaker sampo – a cruise out of the town of Kemi over the course of a day-long trip.
