Lofoten Islands, Norway
Nature at its best
Set within the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands are scattered across the Norwegian Sea. They are islands of desolate and wild beauty, craggy mountains, sweeping fjords, graceful soaring sea-birds and surf-pounded beaches.
The Lofoten Islands are at their most vibrant during the short summer season (June - mid August), but you will be equally rewarded if you visit in spring or autumn.
This 6-day self-drive itinerary starts in the west coast town of Bodø, one of the main gateways to the islands. Then head to Svolvær, the 'capital' of the Lofoten Islands and buzzing with art and culture. Make your way up through the string of islands and explore the area using the fishing harbour of Svolvær as your base.
In Bodø, visit the Norwegian Aviation Museum and see the world's strongest whirlpool or maelstrom. During summer in Lofoten you can sunbathe and have a drink in the midnight sun or in winter search for the Northern Lights. Delight in the spectacular views, whilst traversing the coves and coastlines of these beautiful islands.
