Malaysia holidays

The Malayan countryside is rather like a rich feast, with a little too much of everything good.

George Woodcock, Asia, Gods and Cities

Malaysia holiday experts at WEXAS will tailor-make all aspects of your itinerary to create a Malaysia holiday, personal to you.

Malaysia is separated into two regions, separated by the South China Sea. Peninsular Malaysia borders Thailand and is home to the majority of the population, while East Malaysia on the island of Borneo is actually the larger area. Culturally Malaysia is a mix of customs and religions, and as both Buddhist and Hindu minorities intermingle peacefully with the Muslim majority, there is a great wealth of temples and festivals to explore.  The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a major global city, with its own temples worshipping at the altar of capitalism – the world’s tallest twinned buildings, the Petronas Twin Towers.

The dense jungle of Sarawak and Sabah on Borneo remains untamed and teeming with wildlife, including orang utans and countless new species of flora and fauna being discovered all the time. Beaches throughout Malaysia are some of the world’s most pristine; those on Sabah are some of the best, others have fantastic coral reef diving, and many sit on the edge of lush rainforest – meaning a strenuous jungle trek can end with a refreshing dip in the clear blue sea. But be sure to arrive outside of monsoon season, as many beaches remain off-limits at these times.

Malaysia tailor-made holiday highlights

Kuala Lumpur
Fascinating mix of old and new. Stroll through the bustling night markets, picking up bargain souvenirs, or take the lift up the dizzying viewing platform of the Petronas Twin Towers. At 452-metres high, it's a vivid demonstration of modern Malaysian energy and engineering, incorporating traditional Islamic symbols in its design. The city also has a buzzing Chinatown and an equally intoxicating Little India.

Cameron Highlands
Sip a freshly-brewed cup of tea in this cool hill station with a distinctly genteel English feel. The area is home to a number of major tea plantations.

Sabah & Sarawak
Malaysia's states on Borneo provide access to mountains, virgin rainforst and stunning coastline. In Sabah, walkers can scale the craggy and challenging granite peak of Mount Kinabalu, the highest point between the Himalaya and New Guinea. Rising early to tackle the final stretch, the view from the top at dawn is worth every ounce of energy exerted. There's also great diving to be had in Sipadan, where manta rays, hammerhead sharks and whale sharks swim and where turtles come to lay their eggs. Borneo is also home to wild orang utans. The russet-furred 'man of the forest' can be seen swinging among the canopy at the Sepilok Sanctuary in Sabah and at similar reserves in Sarawak. In Sarawak other attractions include staying overnight in a traditional Malaysian long house or visiting the charming old town of Kuching.

Perhentian Islands
Aquamarine waters and powdery sand in this beautiful marine park off the northeast coast. Dive or snorkel and see turtles, sharks and shipwrecks. Taman Negara The world's oldest jungle, having survived ice ages and human destruction. Canopy walkways allow a great view of inhabitants including the world's smallest races of tiger, rhino and Asian elephant and the world's tallest rainforest tree species.

Penang
Along with Melaka and Port Dickson to the south, this tropical island was formerly a strategic base for colonists and traders. It retains a multicultural feel, with colonial architecture and a lively Chinese culture, and also has some good beaches.
