The annual study of around 20,000 people found 21 per cent of Australians would like to holiday in Melbourne in the next two years, compared to 12 per cent for Sydney, 19 per cent for the Gold Coast and 13 per cent for the Sunshine Coast.
Melbourne bucked the downward trend for domestic travel because of its strong calendar of sporting and cultural events, shopping, café society and fine dining, a spokesperson for Roy Morgan Research said.
In other news, Melbourne has been voted one of the world’s best Food and Wine Destinations in the 2010 TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Destination Awards.
Melbourne was the only Australian destination recognised as a top 10 international spot for Food and Wine, while California’s Napa Valley captured the prestigious poll position. TripAdvisor describes Melbourne as "lovely" and "laid-back" with "something for everyone".
The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Destination Awards honour the world’s top tourism destinations in a variety of categories such as Culture and Sightseeing, Nightlife, and Europeans’ Favourites, in which Melbourne also polled well.
Winners were determined by millions of reviews and opinions shared by travellers on the popular travel website.
