About

Recommended for:
Activity adventure | Natural world | Short break | Wildlife

Using Reykjavik as your base, this curated itinerary combines two of Europe’s greatest wildlife-watching experiences. Indeed, you’ll fly out to a remote fishing village, where you’ll take in one of the world’s largest whale populations, before a scenic cruise brings you to the Westman Islands. Here, alongside the world’s biggest puffin colony, you’ll be treated to volcano giants and historic settlement ruins. Throughout, you’ll enjoy included transfers, excursions and nights among Reykjavik’s heritage and contemporary cutting edge.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK/Reykjavik

After your flight out to the Icelandic capital, you’ll be met by an included transfer and brought to your accommodation. Converted from colourful buildings that date to the 1700s, it’s part of Reykjavik’s history, itself showcased across a compact old town and a spread of superb museums. Our favourites? The exhibitions on excavated Viking longhouses and an open-air reconstruction of a turf-roofed village. Alternatively, simply lose yourself in city’s buzzy dining and bar scene.

Stay: Hotel Reykjavik Centrum (Superior)

Day 2
Whale watching in Húsavík

Flying north to Húsavík, you’ll be treated to a true trip highlight today. Even your flight is scenic; no matter if you’re sat port or starboard, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the country’s rugged interior. You’ll again be met at the airport, this time for the trip to the seashore, where you’ll board a historic oak fishing boat. With the region home to one of the world’s largest populations of whales, you can expect to spot everything from playful porpoises to blue giants. There’s then time to explore the town’s fishing-village charm, perhaps pausing at its Whale Museum before an included transfer sees you to your flight back to Reykjavik.

Stay: Hotel Reykjavik Centrum (Superior)

Day 3
Reykjavik

After breakfast today, you’ll have some free time to explore Reykjavik. We highly recommend a trip to Hallgrímskirkja, whose ultra-contemporary architecture offers sweeping views over the entire city. Otherwise, you might want to leave the city behind on an optional excursion. With its erupting fumaroles, mighty falls and world-first parliament, the Golden Circle grabs the headlines, while southern Iceland offers the chance to head more off the beaten track. Here, you’ll find everything from black-sand beaches to glacier lagoons. There’s even the chance to walk right into a glacier’s ice cave.

Stay: Hotel Reykjavik Centrum (Superior)

Day 4
Puffin spotting in the Westman Islands

Your spread of inclusions today begins with a scenic transfer through southern Iceland’s rolling lowlands to Landeyjahöfn, where you’ll board the ferry to the Westman Islands. And, on arrival, you’ll be treated to a boat tour, taking in dramatic rock formations formed by millennia of volcanic activity. It all centres on what is the world’s largest puffin colony. Then, before retracing your steps with a ferry hop and transfer back to Reykjavik, you’ll enjoy an included bus tour of the main island. You’ll take in everything from giant volcanoes and the local wildlife to the ruins of the archipelago’s first settlement.

Stay: Hotel Reykjavik Centrum (Superior)

Day 5
Depart for UK

After your final breakfast, an included transfer will see you to the airport for your flight home. You might want to pause along the way to enjoy a soak in the world-famous Blue Lagoon.
