About

Recommended for:
Natural world | Rail journey | Short break

You'll complete a 720-mile loop that passes through some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery, with opportunities to take part in a variety of interesting activities and sightseeing excursions along the way, including fishing, clay pigeon shooting whisky tasting and wildlife excursions.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Edinburgh to Keith

Board the Royal Scotsman in the early afternoon in Edinburgh and travel north, crossing the Firth of Forth via the Forth Railway Bridge. Take afternoon tea onboard as the train heads towards the east coast at Arbroath, before continuing up the coast to Aberdeen via Montrose. Along the way there's the chance to meet your fellow travellers at dinner or over a nightcap in the Observation Car, on the way to Keith.

Stay: The Royal Scotsman (D)

Day 2
Keith to Kyle of Lochalsh

Start the day with a hearty breakfast onboard as the train leaves Keith. In the Highlands to the west of Inverness is the Glen Ord Distillery, and here there's the chance to join a whisky tasting class with a master whisky maker. After lunch on board, take in the stunning landscapes as you travel to Kyle of Lochalsh, where optional activities include taking a boat trip in search of seals and other wildlife or enjoying a wee dram at the nearby Plockton Hotel. Alternatively, visit Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland's most iconic sights. Return to the train for a gourmet evening meal followed by entertainment in the Observation Car.

Stay: The Royal Scotsman (B,L,D)

Day 3
Kyle of Lochalsh to Boat of Garten

Depart Kyle as breakfast is served and retrace part of yesterday's route as far as Dingwall. Have your cameras ready for the views of Plockton across the bay to the left, where you can see white-washed cottages with fishing boats and yachts riding at anchor.

Disembark in Garve to visit Glen Ord Distillery, which is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, founded in 1838. Situated on the edge of the Black Isle, west of Inverness, Glen Ord continues to malt its own barley and to use the long fermentation and slow distillation methods followed there for generations. During your visit, enjoy a tour of the distillery as well as a private tasting and nosing session.

Travel south to Carrbridge where you disembark to explore romantic Ballindalloch Castle on beautiful Speyside.

The night is spent on board at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway. After an informal dinner, our Highlander regales guests with tales and weaponry displays.

Stay: The Royal Scotsman (B,L,D)

Day 4
Boat of Garten to Dundee

The day starts with a visit to the Rothiemurchus Estate, where there are opportunities to take a tour of the estate or try fishing or clay pigeon shooting with a local expert. After another delicious lunch onboard it's time to visit medieval Glamis castle before rejoining the train at Perth and spending the final night onboard.

Stay: The Royal Scotsman (B,L,D)

Day 5
Dundee to Edinburgh

Arrive back in Edinburgh after breakfast, with time to see some of the city's sights before heading home or continuing your Scotland holiday.
