Athens

Arriving into the Greek capital, you’ll transfer to your luxury accommodation, the Hotel Grande Bretagne for a two nights stay. Built in 1874, it commands superlative views of the legendary Acropolis, Syntagma Square, Lycabettus Hill or the original Olympic stadium. In all it’s an award winning, five star perspective of the city’s mythical history. And, situated right in the city centre, it’s within walking distance of the exclusive shopping areas, museums and business district. This evening, you’ll enjoy a welcome dinner overlooking the Acropolis from the hotel’s roof garden, a fitting start to the journey ahead.

Athens

Day 4
Thessaloniki

This morning you’ll arrive into Thessaloniki, a city drawn around an arc of coastline at the top of the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean. Soak up the atmosphere of this this vibrant city in its famed Aristotelous Square and admire the architecture of the 15th century White Tower, the city’s emblem for its prominent position and rich past. An informative museum visit will bring it all to life.

Day 5
Plovdiv & Sofia

Known as ‘The City of Seven Hills’, Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest cities in Europe; it features more than 200 archaeological sites. You’ll spend the morning here, exploring its charming Old Town, host to ancient theatres, medieval walls and Ottoman baths before travelling back into the present with Sofia, Bulgaria’s modern capital. That being said, you’ll admire the ancient church of St. George, the golden-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Turkish Bashi Mosque, all set at the foot of feet of Mt. Vitosha.

Day 6
Belgrade

This morning you’ll arrive into the Serbian capital, Belgrade. Strategically located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava, this is a truly cosmopolitan city featuring everything from Celtic fortifications to medieval tombs and Turkish baths. Spending a full day here, your morning tour will pass the Belgrade Fortress, Town Hall, Republic Square and Knez Mihailova Street, the main shopping area. The tour also includes a visit to Tito’s memorial and St. Sava Church, the largest orthodox church in the Balkans. Following a traditional lunch, you’ll visit the superb Tesla Museum, memorialising the life and works of one Nikola Tesla that revolutionised our understanding of magnetism and electricity across the 19th and 20th centuries.

Day 7
Mostar/Sarajevo

This morning, you’ll tour the historic city of Mostar. Something of a crossroads for a rich and varied selection of civilisations, this was one of the most important cities for the Ottoman Empire; the town’s renowned stone arch bridge that links the Christian and Muslim areas a fitting metaphor for its storied diversity. You’ll also wander the narrow bazaar-lined streets to reach mosques and traditional Turkish houses. Come the early afternoon, arrive into the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. Here, you’ll be treated to an intriguing blend of Eastern and Western culture, exemplified by its mosques and minarets, historic bazaars and atmospheric old quarter. Of course, no trip to Sarajevo would be complete without a tour and talk on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the flashpoint of WWI.

Day 8
Ljubljana

Enjoy a full day in the beautiful Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, as well as its equally attractive surrounds. Begin at labyrinthine Predjama Castle and its clifftop perch before continuing to Postojna Cave to ride a narrow gauge train into its depths, marvelling at an ethereal network of stalactites, stalagmites and caverns. Finally, return to the city to combine ancient architecture and youthful culture with sites that include Preseren Square, the Three Bridges and Dragon Bridge.

Day 9
Keszthely/Budapest

Arriving early into Keszthely, enjoy a tour of the Festetics Palace whose Baroque incarnation sits on centuries-old castle ruins. Then, after a relaxing boat cruise on tranquil Lake Balaton, continue onto Budapest where you’ll be treated to a welcome reception in the Royal Waiting Room at Nyugati Station. You’ll then transfer to the five-star Four Seasons Gresham Palace for a two night stay opposite the renowned Chain Bridge.

Day 10
Budapest

On a tour of the Hungarian capital’s two cities split by the Danube, you’ll contrast the old town of Buda with the country’s commercial heart, Pest. Along the way, stop off at the imposing Royal Palace, St. Mathias Church, the Citadel, Opera House, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Heroes’ Square before taking it all in with a panoramic view from Gellert Hill. It’s a truly comprehensive introduction.
