So combine a flightseeing tour above snow-capped peaks and alpine forests with whale watching and cruising through deep fjords and glaciers, and you're met with one of the most spectacular rail and cruise trips in America. Not only home to some of the world’s most striking terrain, among these backdrops lie fascinating historical towns, sleepy remote cities, and astounding gastronomy, showcased in fresh Alaskan seafood. You’ll discover this and more on our rail and cruise trip curated by our specialists, which starts in cosmopolitan Calgary before touring through the jewels of Canadian nature, including Banff, Jasper, and Lake Louise. After boarding the glass-domed Rocky Mountaineer, speeding along rivers and over canyons, you'll then sail through gold rush towns and mountains on the luxurious Holland America ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ending your journey in Vancouver on the British Columbia Coast.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Calgary

After a relaxing start to your journey with included airport lounge access you’ll embark on a daytime flight to Calgary. Once you’ve arrived spend the rest of the day exploring this historic city where you’ll find hints of a past Western influence, encompassed in Canada’s biggest party, the Calgary Stampede. Held every July, millions of locals line the streets as they cheer on rodeo cowboys. You’ll never be stuck for things to do year-round however – Calgary boasts a fascinating Western Canadian history, arts and foodie culture. Calgary heralds itself as having some of the world’s best beef, so don’t miss a visit to a steakhouse – Saltlik is particularly good - before checking in to your city centre accommodation

Stay : Delta Calgary Downtown (Silverleaf) / Fairmont Pallister (Goldleaf)

Day 2
Calgary to Lake Louise

Depart Calgary in the morning to start your tour, enjoying your first taste of the Canadian Rockies as you approach Kananaskis. Take in the views with an included helicopter tour before heading on to Banff, where you’ll get the chance to see many of Alberta’s crowning glories, including the spectacular Bow Falls and Lake Minnewanka. You’ll then head to Surprise Corner for alpine views across forested peaks and the historic Banff Springs Hotel before heading on past towering hoodoo rock formations to Lake Louise. End your day looking out across the Victoria Glacier from your hotel set right on the lake shore

Stay : Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise - Fairmont room (Silverleaf) / Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise - Lakeview Room (Goldleaf)

Day 3
Lake Louise to Banff

With a whole morning free to explore Lake Louise, perhaps head into the hills for a hike – head to Larch Valley to explore rushing rivers, pretty forests and the mountain-framed Sentinel Pass. Then, after lunch, you’ll embark on a tour to the Yoho National Park before taking in the engineering marvel of the Spiral Tunnels and the raw beauty of Emerald Lake and Kicking Horse River. Then, arriving into Banff itself, you'll check into your accommodation framed by spectacular national-park views.

Stay : Banff Caribou Lodge (Silverleaf) / Fairmont Banff Springs (Goldleaf)

Day 4
Banff to Jasper

Spend a memorable day exploring Banff and Jasper national parks with trip-highlight visits to the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Falls. The former is the largest of its kind in the Rockies and sets the scene for an exciting ride on the Ice Explorer, bringing you right onto the Athabasca Glacier itself. In the afternoon you’ll head further north to Jasper and your accommodation amid the pristine wilderness.

Stay : The Crimson Jasper (Silverleaf) / Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (Goldleaf)

Day 5

In the morning, enjoy a tour of the Jasper National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest park in the Canadian Rockies. If there's anywhere to capture that perfect shot, it's here, as you'll be completely surrounded by rugged alpine beauty from enormous mountains, such as the imposing Mount Alberta and Maligne Lake and Canyon. The rest of the day leaves you open to discover even more untouched wilderness, before you return for an evening of relaxation at your hotel.

Stay : The Crimson Jasper (Silverleaf) / Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (Goldleaf)

Day 6

Begin the day by boarding the glass-domed Rocky Mountaineer train, taking in the Rockies' wild remotes as you travel from Jasper to Kamloops in British Columbia. As you speed south, you'll head to the outdoor viewing platform to be greeted by the dramatic river valleys of the Cariboo mountains and the imposing Continental Divide. After passing the Yellowhead Pass, Pyramid Falls and Mount Robson, the highest point in the Rockies, you’ll travel along the North Thompson River to Kamloops, a journey backdropped by imposing mountain peaks.

Stay: Kamloops

Meals: L

Day 7
Kamloops to Vancouver

Continue on the Rocky Mountaineer towards Vancouver. As you head west, the landscape becomes ever more dramatic, from rugged forests and river canyons to the alpine beauty of the Fraser Valley. After journeying through the Cascade Mountains and the extraordinary, if not slightly unnerving, Hells’s Gate in the southern Fraser Canyon, you’ll arrive in Vancouver for a stay on the waterfront. Relax and admire the ocean views overlooking the Burrard Inlet and distant Coast Mountains.

Stay : Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront (Silverleaf) / Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver (Goldleaf)

Days 8-9
Vancouver/Inside Passage

Step on board the Holland America’s ms Nieuw Amsterdam to begin your luxury cruise through the Alaskan wilderness. Take the chance to relax in your suite and enjoy your first evening on board with the ship’s gastronomic delights and blues bands who grace the stage nightly. After spoiling yourself at the ship's luxury spa and salon, step on deck to marvel at the dramatic Inside Passage as you sail north, passing among glaciers and 100-metre-tall Sitka spruce trees, through spectacular fjords and striking snow-covered mountains.

Stay: ms Nieuw Amsterdam (Superior)

Day 10

After a relaxing day at sea you’ll arrive at Alaska’s sleepy capital, Juneau. This remote state capital is not accessible by road, but this makes it all the more charming – embrace the absence of cars with a hike to the Mendenhall Glacier, then sample some freshly caught fish. Juneau’s fauna is the area’s crowning glory, though – trek Mount Roberts to catch sight of roaming wild deer and bald eagles soaring among snow-capped peaks. If you prefer your excursions on the open water, take a boat to Chichagof Island to watch bears foraging in their natural habitat, or spend a few hours at Auke Bay watching majestic whales breaching framed by stunning alpine forests.

Stay: ms Nieuw Amsterdam (Superior)

Day 11

After sailing north to Skagway, you’ll spend a day exploring this fascinating port town, formerly the main access point for prospectors hoping to cash in during the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. It's a heritage that can be explored in greater detail at the Klondike National Historical Park, much of which is comprised by the preserved town. Indeed, you’ll find remnants of the gold rush round every corner, from the White Pass/Yukon and Route Railway through mountains and glaciers that connected Skagway to Yukon, to the famous Red Onion Saloon and colourful restored buildings.

Stay: ms Nieuw Amsterdam (Superior)

Day 12
Glacier Bay Scenic Cruise

After breakfast and a short sail north, you’ll arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Glacier Bay National Park. The park is also a biosphere reserve, protecting the plants and animals that live in its barren wilderness, and its ice has, in recent years, risen annually by an average of 30mm. Here, you’ll explore the spectacular rainforest near the mouth of the bay, a region home to humpback whales and bears. The most magnificent sight you’ll see here though is the calving glacier itself – watch in awe as house-size chunks of ice crash into the ocean below.

Stay: ms Nieuw Amsterdam (Superior)

Days 13-14
Ketchikan/Inside Passage

The first land you'll spot as you re-enter the Inside Passage, Ketchikan is all green forests, native culture, colourful buildings, and wilderness carved by its glacial surrounds. It's a superb place to sample fresh seafood – salmon fishing is a vital part of the region's heritage. The rugged Misty Fjords National Monument is a wonderful day trip, and be sure to take the opportunity for souvenir shopping on charming Creek Street, comprised of eclectic shops and locally-owned restaurants. As you navigate the dramatic Inside Passage, day 14 will be spent  cruising through the deep fjords and taking in more of that majestic scenery.

Stay: ms Nieuw Amsterdam (Superior)

Days 15-16
