Expect 700-year-old battlements to look down on palm-fringed pools while beautifully carved cloisters host gourmet restaurants.
Eight-day Lisbon Loop – The Heart of Portugal
Flying in and out of the Portuguese capital, this is a comprehensive appreciation of both Portugal's urbane charms and rural beauty. You’ll begin with Lisbon, staying in a mansion that once belonged to the royal family, before turning inland to overnight in a medieval castle-monastery in Flor de Rosa, a quintessential Portuguese village. Then, it’s south to spend the night in Estremoz’s 14th-century castle. The site of many a royal visit, it’s a truly regal experience. You’ll then dip into the Alentejo region for some hiking and wine tasting as you stay in a tranquil, 16th-century convent. Your last two nights will then be spent in a Moorish castle, exploring Roman ruins and enjoying some well-deserved seaside relaxation in Alcácer do Sal.
Prices from: £350 winter season per person
Package includes: Return flights to Lisbon, 8 days car hire and 7 nights staying in Pousada accommodation on a B&B basis

Alentejo and the Algarve – Eight Days
With a flight into historic Lisbon, you’ll drive south to Alcácer do Sal. Here, you’ll stay in a medieval Moorish castle as you take in this historic centre’s ancient heritage and pretty beaches. Then, it’s on to Arraiolos, an idyllic hilltop town built around your pousada – a 16th-century convent. Your next convent stop is in Vila Viçosa whose stunning countryside setting is ideal for hikes, cycle rides and birdwatching. Then, a last night in Alentejo will be spent in Beja, a charming whitewashed town whose cobbled streets open up to spectacular plains views. You’ll stay in a palm-fringed Franciscan convent that dates to the 1200s. End in Sagres, a sleepy fisherman’s town of sandy beaches, hilltop forts and an end-of-the-world lighthouse. Lastly, with a final drive along the coast, you'll fly out of Faro.
