Portugal's Douro Valley is one of Europe’s oldest and most enchanting wine regions, and The Vintage House is steeped in romantic history. Located right beside the river, in the charming town of Pinhão, it’s possible to get here from Porto by train, or on a boat, with the dock steps away from the hotel.
The hotel has been converted from an 18th-century wine lodge, and is full of original character, antiques and memorabilia, most notably in the Library Bar, where a crackling fireplace and an old wooden beamed ceiling adds to the long-ago atmosphere.
There are just 50 rooms, and four new suites, almost all of them overlooking the river. It’s a view shared by the outdoor pool – a splendid and soothing spot, where it’s perfectly possible to spend entire days. However, boat trips and exploring the town and surrounding wine estates are not to be missed.
On return the wine academy and shop and delectable dining add to the sense of extreme relaxation. The Rabelo Restaurant stretches onto a terrace overlooking the Douro River and serves local specialities including the finest Jamón Ibérico and suckling pig belly.
