About

Recommended for:
City | History & culture | Rail journey

Visit all three on this ten-day rail tour, beginning in Prague where you'll visit city's fortress-like castle, perched high above the Vlatva River, and have the chance to experience Bohemian village life in UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Cesky Krumlov. Next, head to Vienna, home to a host of historical treasures, including the magnificent Hofburg, the residence of the Hapsburg emperors until 1918. Finally, take to the waters in beautiful Budapest, a city of hotsprings, Hungarian hospitality and some of Eastern Europe's most impressive neoclassical, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture.

Take the train to Vienna and check in to either Hotel Kärntnerhof (standard), a privately run boutique hotel in a 19th century building just three minutes' walk from St Stephen's Cathedral, or the ARCOTEL Wimberger (superior), a popular spot among artists and celebrities since it opened in 1871.

Take the day to explore what is both culturally and musically one of the richest cities in the world, or perhaps take an optional tour of the Danube Valley, visiting the Benedictine abbey at Melk and the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, where according to legend Richard the Lionheart was geld prisoner upon his return from the Crusades.

North of where it divides Buda from Pest, the Danube twists through a narrow valley that many consider the loveliest stretch in its 1,890-mile journey from the Black Forest to the Black Sea.
