About

Activity adventure | Escorted tour | History & culture | Natural world | Northern Lights | Winter

This five-day escorted tour takes in the wonderful winter wilderness of southern Iceland, starting and ending in the capital Reykjavik and visiting a number of the region's most impressive sites, from the iceberg-filled waters of the Jokulsarlon Lagoon to the dramatic waterfalls of Gullfoss and Skogafoss among others.

Throughout your Iceland winter holiday you'll stay in remote countryside locations far from the city lights, giving you the very best chance of catching a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights that can often be seen dancing overhead in the clear Icelandic skies.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Reykjavik

Arrive in Reykjavik, Iceland's colourful capital and transfer to your hotel where you'll check in for a one-night stay and spend the remainder of the day exploring the city. In the evening, despite the city lights, the Northern Lights can often be seen in the skies above the capital. If they appear later on in the night the hotel offers a wake up service for those keen to catch a first glimpse of this celestial phenomenon.

Stay: Centerhotel Plaza, Reykjavik

Day 2
Golden Circle

Depart Reykjavik and head into the region known as the Golden Circle, home to some of Iceland's most impressive geological sites. Your tour will take you to the famous hot spring area of Geysir, to the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park where you can see first hand the devastating forces of the Atlantic Rift at work. Take in the dramatic landscapes and fascinating history of the region - Thingvellir was the site of the ancient Icelandic parliament - before heading to visiting a local stable to see some Icelandic horses. You'll then head through the stunning countryside of southern Iceland to your hotel where you'll spend the next two nights. Keep an eye on the night sky for a sight of the Northern Lights.

Stay: Hotel Katla, Vik (Standard)

Day 3
Glacier Lagoon

Head east this morning along Iceland's south coast to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, one of the country's most impressive sites. This relatively recent addition to Iceland's treasure trove of natural splendours - the lagoon developed around 60 years ago - is a dramatic seascape dotted with milky white and piercing blue icebergs surrounded by a beautiful range of snow-covered mountains. The lagoon itself is full of fish and during the winter months, seals gather at its mouth to reap the rewards of this bountiful harvest. Pass through the stunning winter landscapes of the Vatnajokull and Skaftafell national parks on your way back to your hotel.

Stay: Hotel Katla, Vik (Standard)

Day 4
Volcanoes & Waterfalls

This morning sees you journey back along the south coast, taking in Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls as well as the spectacular Myrdalsjokull and volcanoes, stopping at the latter's visitor centre at the very foot of the mountain where you'll learn about the impact the 2010 eruption had on the local community.

Finally you'll head back to Reykjavik, stopping along the way at the Blue Lagoon for a soak in the rejuvenating mineral-rich waters.

Stay: Centerhotel Plaza, Reykjavik

Day 5
Departure

Transfer to Keflavik Airport on the outskirts of Reykjavik in time to board your onward flight, or extend your stay in the world's northernmost capital city.
