Bookended by stays in the capital, Santiago, where guided tours take in everything from colonial neighbourhoods to busy markets, this tailor-made journey explores the very best of Patagonia's striking natural wonders. Begin in Puerto Varas – the ‘City of Roses’ – where a three-day stay includes visits to volcanic national parks and mysterious Chiloé Island. You might even decide to coincide your trip with the total solar eclipse, taking place over the Chilean Lakes in December 2020. Finally, head south to the Singular Patagonia, a luxury lodge situated between Punta Arenas and the iconic peaks of the Torres del Paine National Park.
Day by day itinerary
Enjoy included VIP airport lounge access before your overnight flight from the UK to Santiago.
With just one day to explore the capital, a guided tour will take you to Santa Lucía Hill – whose fountains and stairways date back to 1541 – and the Barrio Paris–Londres, home to some of the city’s most impressive colonial-era architecture. You'll stop for coffee at one of the city's notorious café con piernas, visit the cultural district of Lastarria with its galleries, museums and theatres, and explore the lively Vega Chica Market – a hub of bustling commerce where it's possible to buy everything from exotic fish to tasty local street food. It's here that you'll try one of Chile's most popular drinks, Cola de Mono - similar to a White Russian.
Stay: The Singular, Santiago (Deluxe)
Leave the city behind as you head south to Puerto Montt and on to Puerto Varas. Known as the ‘City of Roses’, this laid back town is located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue with sweeping views to the conical peak of Osorno. On day two, you’ll pass secluded beaches on the way to the Parc Naçional Vicente Pérez Rosales. Stopping briefly at Petrohué Falls you’ll board a catamaran to sail across Todos Los Santos Lake to the Andean town of Puella Puella, just a stone’s throw from the border with Argentina. The next day it’s off to enigmatic Chiloé Island. After a tour of Ancud, with its museum, fortress and busy market, you’ll visit the island’s west coast to see the only nesting grounds on earth where Humboldt and Magellan penguins breed side by side.
Stay: Hotel Cumbres, Puerto Varas (Superior)
After a morning tour of Puerto Varas’s lively fish market, you’ll fly south to Punta Arenas. Then, it’s a long but scenic transfer to Puerto Natales on the road to the Torres del Paine National Park. For three memorable days you’ll be based at the Singular Patagonia, a former-abattoir-turned-luxury-lodge on the shores of Last Hope Sound. While its 100 kilometres from the national park entrance, the hotel offers the chance to discover a relatively unexplored part of Patagonia through a programme of activities that includes a boat trip through the fjords, kayaking, hiking, horse riding, fishing (at extra cost), cycling and full-day trips to Torres de Paine. There’s also a pool, a wonderful restaurant and an indulgent spa to help fill any spare hours.
Stay: The Singular Patagonia, Puerto Natales (Superior)
