This 14-day holiday, which includes the services of an expert Egyptologist, encompasses all that this ancient and fascinating country has to offer. Explore clamorous Cairo, gaze at the Great Pyramids and sail in luxury down the lifeblood of Egypt on a five-day luxury Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan aboard the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, finishing your Egyptian odyssey with a two-night stay in the historic coastal city of Alexandria. Accommodation throughout the tour is at athe very best hotels Egypt has to offer, including the Mena House at the foot of the pyramids and the beautifully renovated Old Cataract in Aswan.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Cairo and meet your tour representative who will transfer you to your hotel and assist with check-in. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in preparation for your adventure to begin.

Day 2

After breakfast, you'll meet your Egyptologist who will take you on morning tour of Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt dating from 3,100BC, then it's on to the necropolis at Sakkara where you'll find the the oldest known of Egypt's 107 pyramids. In the afternoon proceed to the site of the most famous of all sites, the 4,500 year-old pyramids at Giza. The Great Pyramid is the only survivor of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" as well as being the site of the legendary Sphinx, thought to have been built to guard the entrance to the Pharaoh's burial site.

Day 3

Visit the Egyptian Museum, home to an unparalleled collection of Egyptian artifacts with over 120,000 objects within 107 halls. Some of the most celebrated treasures, including a gold mask, gold sarcophagus and throne, are those taken from the tomb of King Tutankhamen. Next you'll head into Islamic Cairo and the Al Azhar Park, a beautiful oasis in the heart of the city, created for the citizens of Cairo by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. From the park you'll head to the Citadel, a magnificent medieval fortress perched atop limestone cliffs, high above the city. Spend the rest of the day exploring the citadel's mosques and museums before continuing to the Mosque of Sultan Hassan - renowned for its rich decoration and grand arcitecture - and Khan El Khalili, reputed to be the largest bazaar in the Middle East. Here you'll have the chance to practice your haggling skills as you shop for everything from woodwork and glassware to leather goods and perfumes. Or, if you prefer, simply wander the labryinth of narrow lanes and soak up the sights and sounds of this magnificent market.

Day 4

After breakfast, you'll transfer to Cairo International Airport for your flight to Luxor. On arrival, you'll transfer to a private dock to board your luxurious Nile cruise boat, the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer, to begin your five-day journey along one of the world's great rivers. Lunch will be served on board, followed by a guided tour of Luxor in the company of an expert Egyptologist, taking in the ancient Luxor and Karnak Temples. Return to the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer this evening for a cocktail reception and the chance to chat with the Boat Manager and your fellow guests.

Day 5
Valley of the Kings

This morning, after a sumptuous buffet breakfast, you'll visit Luxor's West Bank, home to the Valley of the Kings, where the tombs of the great Pharaohs were carved into the desert rock. You'll also visit the valley of the Queens and the Temple of Queen Hatshesput, Egypt's only female Pharaoh, an astonishing monument, which blends almost seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Take the chance for a photo stop at the Colossi of Memnon on your way back to the Nile, where you'll rejoin the boat in time for afternoon tea and later, dinner.

Day 6

Your Nile adventure continues this morning with a visit to Esna, once again in the expert company of the boat's resident Egyptologist, who'll help you uncover the secrets of the Greco-Roman Temple of Khnum. After lunch on board you'll explore the Greek-built Temple of Horus at Edfu, the largest and best-preserved Pharaonic temple in Egypt. Return to the boat for a cooking class, followed by afternoon tea as you cruise towards Kom Ombo. Tonight, a gourmet dinner will be served on board.

Day 7
Kom Ombo and Aswan

After breakfast, take a tour of the Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile-god Sobek, which stands at a bend in the Nile where, in ancient times, crocodiles would come to sunbathe on the riverbank. Enjoy lunch on board as you cruise towards Aswan, stopping for a tour of Philae Temple on the Island of Agilka. Later in the afternoon you'll stop again, this time for a tour of the ancient Granite Quarries, which still hold a huge, unfinished obelisk. Finish the day by taking a ride on a traditional Egyptian sailing boat, known as a felucca, taking in Elephantine Island, Lord Kitchener's Island and the impressive Agha Khan Mausoleum. Return to the boat for a final afternoon tea, followed by a gala dinner (jacket required) and the chance to reflect on an incredible voyage, while saying a fond farewell to your fellow guests.

Days 8-9

Disembark the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer and transfer to the Sofitel Old Cataract for a two-night stay. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

The next day, you'll enjoy an excursion by air to the ancient temples of Abu Simbel, a vast complex built by Ramses II, Egypt's longest ruling Pharaoh. Explore the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte, with four colossal statues of Ramses II himself guarding the entrance, followed by a tour of the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the Pharaoh's favourite wife Queen Nefertari.

Day 10

Check out and transfer to Aswan Airport for your flight back to Cairo. On arrival back in the capital, you'll be met and transferred to the Four Seasons Alexandria, around four hours away.

Day 11

Spend today exploring the archaeological wonders of Alexandria, beginning with the Roman Amphitheatre, which, during its day, would have been replete with white marble seats and up to 800 spectators, cheering all manor of performances, from musical theatre to wrestling. Next, visit the Catacombs of Kom El Shugafa, the largest Roman burial site in Egypt, which served as the final resting place for 300 of Alexandria's finest. The tombs themselves are impressive feats of engineering, cut into the bedrock in giant tiers, which descend 35 metres into the ground. Finish your day with a tour of the Alexandria Library and Museum, a modern structure, built by the sea on what is thought to be the site of the Great Library of Alexandria, a seat of ancient learning, which sadly burned to the ground some time during the 4th century AD.

Day 12

Spend this morning at leisure, exploring Alexandria under your own steam, before transferring back to Cairo, where you'll spend the final night of your trip.
