Christmas | December holidays | Self-drive | Winter
For some, no festive period is complete without a trip to a Christmas market. And, like most things, the originals are still the best. Since the late Middle Ages, Germany has been the jolly author of these merry occasions – a tradition that it continues to this day. Sip on spiced mulled wine, snack on freshly baked goodies and get swept up in waves of heartfelt goodwill. This weeklong road trip also presents an ideal opportunity to explore Germany’s great cities and historic towns. There’s medieval Frankfurt, Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s gingerbread cottage good looks and Dresden’s 18th century skyline. End your trip with two nights in that great cultural powerhouse – Berlin.
Day by day itinerary
Flying with British Airways into Frankfurt, you’ll meet our representative who’ll help you in picking up your hire car. With the rest of the day at leisure, you’ll drive to your central accommodation. From here, you’ll make your first introductions to Germany’s Christmas markets at one of the country’s largest, stretching from Römberberg to St. Paul’s Square. After enjoying your fill of good cheer and apple wine – the city’s speciality – spend some time exploring a city that is at once modern and traditional. You’ll compare the glass and steel of its skyscrapers to the timber and brick of its medieval old city, host to convivial taverns and artsy cafés.
Stay: Mövenpick Frankfurt City (Superior)
Würzburg/Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Make the two-hour’s drive east to Würzburg, a city with more than 1300 years of history. Cobblestone streets lead to historic fortresses, Romanesque cathedrals and the famous Würzburg Residenz, a UNESCO-listed palace that ranks among the world’s finest examples of baroque architecture. Continue on to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Often considered the prettiest town on Germany’s Romantic Road, its small streets and fairytale buildings host a delightful market.
Stay: Hotel Eisenhut (Superior)
Your next stop is Nuremberg and the famous Christkindlesmarkt. Dating back more than 400 years, it’s one of Germany’s most popular Christmas markets. Lose yourself among enticing aromas of mulled wine, rum punch and roasted almonds as you tuck into bratwurst and gingerbread. No trip to the spectacle would be complete without a glimpse of the Nuremberg Christkind – a lady of long blond curls, white dress and golden crown that’s been the market’s ambassador for decades. Outside of the festivities, you’ll find a history that recalls everything from grand castles and great railways to world wars.
Stay: Maritim Nürnberg (Superior)
Continue north towards the Czech Republic border and Dresden. Despite its tragic world war past, its spires and domes still mark historic palaces and churches, predicated on its 18th century heyday. You’ll also find the excellent Striezelmarkt. The earliest record of its existence dates it back as far as 1434 and it’s still host to traditional Saxon treats, festive music and hearty food today.
Stay: NH Collection Dresden Altmarkt (Superior)
Start your day by exploring Dresden further. There’s the immaculately restored Lutheran Frauenkirche, the 19th century Semperoper Opera House and the Zwinger, an imperial palace that covers extensive grounds and fine Rococo architecture. Don’t forget to take some time out with a stroll along the Elbe River. In the afternoon, make your way to Berlin to explore what is one of Europe’s most important cities. Perhaps start with one of its many famous Christmas markets.
Stay: Maritim proArte (Superior)
Discover a Berlin both historic and modern. Begin with the latter for the leafy Unter den Linden boulevard, the neoclassic State Opera and the iconic Brandenburg Gate. You’ll also have time to explore parts where cutting-edge architecture has added new dimensions; both the German Parliament and the Potsdam Square feature soaring glass domes that are fast becoming national symbols.
