The ancient wine-making villages, historic towns and world-famous vineyards that frame Portugal's iconic Douro make for a truly wonderful cruise. So much so, that even TV favourite Jane McDonald recently enjoyed a sail through its historic surrounds. And, this luxury, all-inclusive offering, on stylish APT ship AmaVida, will see you enjoy all that it has to offer, from tastings in historic vineyards to medieval city exploration. After flying to Porto, the colourful jewel of Portugal and gateway to the Douro, you'll make like Jane and begin with a fabulous welcome dinner and drinks on board. Explore with included sightseeing excursions, from cooking demonstrations and walking tours to family vineyard tastings, before sailing among the terraced hills of Pinhao and mountain-framed town of Barca D’Alva, culminating your journey among Madrid's buzzing town squares, sumptuous food markets and exquisite architecture. Alongside it all, enjoy the use of the luxury ship's spa and pool deck, with gourmet dining, drinks, transfers and port excursions included throughout.

UK to Porto

Fly to Porto and, on arrival, transfer to your luxury river ship, the MS AmaVida. Settle in to your opulent stateroom – most of which have balconies, floor-to-ceiling or panoramic windows to make the most of outside's vineyard-framed views – before a welcome reception and dinner, enjoying locally-inspired cuisine with free-flowing local wines.

Stroll among the 16th-century Old Town, embark on a port tasting or even visit a traditional restaurant for a cooking demonstration. Then, this evening, we've included a guided tour of the famous Neoclassical Bolsa Palace followed by a cocktail reception and traditional folk dancing 'Fado' performance in the palace's opulent Arabian Hall.

Day 3
Guimaraes

Sail to UNESCO-listed Guimaraes today, one of the area's most well-preserved medieval areas and considered the 'birthplace of Portugal'. Enjoy a fascinating tour of the area before heading back on board to enjoy an ultra-scenic cruise through the Douro Valley to reach the beautiful family vineyard of Quinta da Avelada, a producer of wine in the Douro region since the 1870s. You'll have the chance to explore the sprawling gardens and olive groves on a guided tour before indulging in a local cheese and wine-paired tasting.

Alternatively, visit the beautiful Quinta da Pacheca, one of the best wine estates in the Douro, for a panoramic picnic looking over the hills. Your second day in Pinhao will see you enjoy a traditional lunch and port tasting at the Quinta da Roeda vineyard before a tour of the 18th-century Mateus Palace.
