Between tours and wine tastings, stay among Malta’s fascinating past

About

Recommended for:
Food & wine | History & culture | Relaxation

Your base for five nights is the Casa Ellul – a 19th century neoclassical palazzo in the historic centre of Valletta – the European Capital of Culture 2018. As a peninsular city of less than half a square mile, it’s crammed full of 16th-century stonework delights each contributing to a burnished gold aesthetic that’s famous the world over. You’ll also enjoy tours to Mdina’s medieval sights – including a wine tasting session along the way – and the island of Gozo, where you’ll find ancient temples and imposing citadels. You’ll also have plenty of time to explore Malta for yourself with its excellent snorkelling and diving matched only by its vibrant, local festivals.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK/ Malta

Arriving in Malta, a private transfer will meet you at the airport to bring you to your hotel in central Valletta, a World Heritage City and UNESCO-protected site. As a member of Small Luxury Hotels, the 19th century boutique Casa Ellul features just eight suites that have been tastefully decorated and carefully restored with polished marble floors and roll top baths. What’s more, it’s perfectly positioned to explore the city sights; the baroque interior and limestone spires of the 16th century St John’s Co-Cathedral – Malta’s most famous church – are just a stone’s throw away. After checking in, we recommend taking the evening to introduce yourself to the city, perhaps tasting some of the local cuisine at one of its many excellent restaurants.

Day 2
Mdina

After a continental breakfast of everything from cold cuts and cheeses to bacon and eggs, you’ll be picked up from the hotel to embark on a private tour of Mdina. An Arabic city walled with golden stone, its hilltop perch looks out over landscaped gardens – once a fortified moat. As the medieval residence of Maltese aristocracy, you’ll find the stunning St Paul’s Cathedral and, in nearby Naxxar, the Palazzo Parisio, which has justly been described as a ‘Versailles in miniature’. To round off the day, you’ll visit the Meridiana winery to taste your way through the local offerings while enjoying vineyard views.

Day 3
Valletta

Today is yours to explore everything Valletta – and beyond – has to offer. UNESCO have described it as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’, so there’s plenty to see. Visit the opulent Grand Master’s Palace – home to over 5,000 suites of armour – along with 16th-century covered gardens where a cannon is fired twice a day, each time with great ceremony. Alternatively, the deconstructed modernism of the Parliament Building, City Gate and Opera House are sights to behold.

Day 4
Gozo

Following your morning meal, you’ll be once again picked up from your hotel for a private tour, this time to the island of Gozo where sun-bleached Mediterranean buildings look out over tiny ports and azure waters. Aside from its pristine countryside, it’s well known for its handicrafts, particularly handmade lace and knitted garments. Highlights of the day include a tour around the megalithic temples of Ġgantija – the oldest free standing monuments in the world, pre-dating even Egypt’s pyramids. Lastly, there’s Victoria’s medieval citadel – a fortified city complete with imposing bastions, batteries and polveristas. You’ll return to your hotel in the early evening.

Day 5
Valletta

Your final day in Malta has been left free for you to relax and enjoy Valletta or explore the island further. Spend the day scuba diving and snorkelling, or perhaps make the most of the many festivals Malta has to offer. Religious holidays take on new meaning with ethereal Christmas lights and carol services while Easter brings a Holy Week of passionate activities. In between, you’ll find everything from carnivals and fireworks to arts festivals and jazz nights.
