On this weeklong tour, you’ll explore its three main islands – São Miguel, Terceira and São Jorge – with included excursions that bring you between the Azores’ rich history and magnificent natural world. You’ll also take in the islands’ delightfully varied gastronomy, with the likes of tea tastings, wine tours and delicious lunches showcasing everything from slow-cooked steaks to stews prepared in underground volcanic ovens.
Day by day itinerary
Fly to São Miguel
With included airport lounge access, you’ll start your holiday in style before your flight out to the Azores island of São Miguel. Then, on arrival, a private transfer will whisk you to your hotel – the São Miguel Park in Ponta Delgada. Located close to the Botanical Gardens and with views out over the city and the island’s southern coast, it’s a wonderful base from which to explore. Spend the rest of the day exploring the museums and churches of the historic centre before returning to the hotel’s sauna, Jacuzzi and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Stay: São Miguel Park (Superior)
A full day on São Miguel sees you to the beautiful Sete Cidades lakes, stopping along the way to take in the views from the Vista do Rei. Then, after calling in to a pineapple plantation en route back to Ponta Delgada, you’ll board a flight to the island of Terceira, the setting for the next day’s jeep tour. This full-day adventure brings you to the island’s rural heart, tracing the coastline for spectacular Atlantic views before calling at the village of Biscoitos, where you’ll see how the local wine is made and, if you like, milk a cow. Then, for lunch, you’ll head to a nearby restaurant to try deliciously slow-cooked Alcatra beef before ending the day at the volcanic pit of Algar do Carvão. Lunch is included on day three only.
Stay: Azoris Angra Garden Hotel (Superior)
After an included airport transfer this morning, board a flight to the island of São Jorge. Then, after a day of relaxation, head out on a full-day island tour, taking in the debris fields of The Fajã do Ouvidor and visiting a local co-operative to see the production of woven goods and garments. You’ll then explore the 18th-century Baroque church at Manadas followed by further ecclesiastical treasures at Urzelina whose ancient church tower is the only one to remain standing following a volcanic eruption in 1808.
Stay: São Jorge Garden Hotel (Superior)
Returning to São Miguel by plane and a pair of included transfers, you’ll enjoy a day of languid relaxation before the last of your included tours on day eight. Beginning with the smoking calderas and geothermal pools at Furnas, you’ll then take in sweeping views of the Furnas Lake from the Pico do Ferro viewpoint. Then, after winding along spectacular coastal roads, you’ll arrive at the Gorreana Tea Factory for a guided tasting. Finally, return to Furnas for a long lunch of cozido stew, cooked to perfection in an underground volcanic oven. Lunch is included on day seven only.
Stay: Terra Nostra Garden Hotel (Superior)
