Sintra/Cascais/Estoril
Today, you’ll embark on a private tour covering the highlights of the surrounding region. You’ll begin in UNESCO-listed Sintra, a beautifully preserved hilltop town renowned for its 10th-century Moorish castle and fairytale-esque Pena Palace – a masterpiece of 19th-century Romanticist architecture. Then, you’ll head to the coast, making a stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. After admiring the views from these dramatic sea cliffs, you’ll continue along the coast to the delightful fishing village of Cascais. Finally, you’ll pass through Estoril – the original source of inspiration behind Ian Fleming’s James Bond – en route back to Lisbon.

Fátima/Nazaré/Óbidos
Having explored Lisbon’s immediate surroundings yesterday, today’s private guided tour will take you further north, firstly stopping in Fátima. Here, you’ll visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, widely regarded as Portugal’s most important Catholic pilgrimage site – a vast religious complex consisting of two main basilicas, several chapels and a central esplanade. From here, you’ll move on to Nazaré, a surfing town renowned for its immense waves, caused by a combination of a deep underwater canyon and powerful swells from the North Atlantic. In October 2020, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner broke the Guinness World Record here for the largest wave ever surfed (26.21 metres/86 feet). Before returning to Lisbon, you’ll stop in Óbidos, a picturesque medieval village characterised by whitewashed buildings and flower-lined cobbled streets. It’s also known for its impressive medieval castle and famous cherry liqueur, Ginja de Óbidos, which is traditionally served in edible dark chocolate cups.

Lagos & Sagres (optional tour)
Today, you’ll have the option of joining a private tour of the Western Algarve region. Should you decide to do so, your first stop will be Sagres, a town known for its 15-century fortress, dramatic sea cliffs and excellent surfing beaches. Nearby, there’s also the opportunity to visit Cape St. Vincent, a rocky headland at the southwesternmost tip of mainland Europe, which is marked by a distinctive red lighthouse on the site of a 16th-century Franciscan convent. The tour then continues to Lagos, which served as the maritime hub of Portugal’s Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. Indeed, it was here that Prince Henry the Navigator launched caravels that would set sail for the West African coast. In Lagos, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the 17th-century Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, explore the cobbled lanes and squares of the Old Town, stroll alongside the ancient city walls and admire the intricate, gilded carvings of the baroque-style Santo Antonio Church.
