Location
Gorilla Forest Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary is located in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Uganda. The area is home to more than half of the world’s roughly 1,000 mountain gorillas, making the lodge a perfect base from which to spot these elusive creatures on treks in the surrounding jungle. As the lodge offers magnificent views overlooking the lush jungle canopy, it’s also possible to spot a rich variety of birdlife, colourful butterflies and monkeys among the trees.
Accommodation
The lodge features just 10 suites, each consisting of earthy tones of green, terracotta and clay along with sustainably sourced, natural materials – such as banana-leaf ceilings and wooden floors – to create a sense of harmony with the natural surroundings. Full-length windows, meanwhile, enhance the feeling of immersion in the jungle. Each suite comes with a private verandah with hanging chairs, from which it’s often possible to spot monkeys swinging through the canopy.
Dining
Mornings at Gorilla Forest Lodge begin with a generous continental of English buffet breakfast, while lunch is served on the outdoor terrace (while picnic boxes can be arranged for guests heading out on gorilla treks). Later on, canapés and cocktails are served in the boma to a backdrop of live folk music, while three-course dinners feature a combination of Ugandan flavours and international classics, with an emphasis on the finest local produce. Drinks are also complimentary, including premium spirits and wines.
Facilities
As well as unforgettable gorilla trekking, the lodge also offers guided nature walks and bird watching tours in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, showcasing the region’s extraordinary biodiversity. Back at base, there’s no better place to unwind than the Explorer’s Lounge, which is stocked with maps and books about the flora, fauna and culture of Bwindi. After an action-packed day of exploration, guests can also indulge in invigorating, all-natural massages and treatments at the spa.
