The western slopes of the Pichincha Volcano near Quito are covered in beautiful cloud forests, perfect for nature lovers wanting to indulge their sense of adventure.
A great base is Mindo, a small town surrounded by these lush forests, as well as dairy farms and rivers. You could enjoy walking, horse riding, river tubing, canyoning, zip lining, swimming in waterfalls and more.
The area is one of Ecuador's best for bird watching, with more than 450 species identified in the Mindo area alone, including the cock-of-the-rock, golden-headed quetzal and toucan-barbet.
A large part of the beautiful cloud forest area around Mindo has been designated a nature reserve, filled with a spectacular array of flora and fauna, and many waterfalls.
Entry to the reserve itself is restricted to scientists, but a buffer zone of private reserves exists, which offers many opportunities for exploration.
The many orchideariums and butterfly farms are a great place to experience the area's rich diversity.
