Visit the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands have been a popular winter getaway for many years, a place to soak up the sunshine, swim, sail and stroll beside the sea. They're often regarded as a budget holiday destination, with cheap flights and hotel packages, and it's true that there are frequently travel bargains to be had to this atmospheric island outpost of Spain. But that needn't mean sacrificing quality and there's a good choice of elegant accommodation options to cater for upmarket tastes as well, as well as interesting island excursions.

The Canary Islands are closer to Morocco than Spain, and it was from North Africa that the islands were settled by Guanches, peoples of Berber origin, prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 15th century. A distinctive ‘whistle language' still spoken on the island of La Gomera called Silbo is a lasting legacy of the Guanches.

The biggest and best-known island in the sun-kissed archipelago is Tenerife, dominated by the lofty Mount Teide, Spain's highest mountain. The island has attractive beaches - some layered with golden sands and others with black volcanic sands - fringed by resorts such as Los Cristanos and Puerto de la Cruz, where most of the holiday action is focused. Tenerife is also known for it's vibrant annual Carnival, one of the world's best.

The other Canary Islands - Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma - are also excellent year-round holiday destinations, with volcanic interiors, fabulous beaches and activities from windsurfing and walking, to jeep safaris and camel rides. As such, deciding where to travel to can be a bit of a conundrum, although generally the smaller Canary Islands are quieter places than the larger ones. But there's definitely something for everyone here.

Where to go in Canary Islands

La Palma

The green island of La Palma has been dubbed ‘the pretty isle' of the Canaries due to the contrasting appearance to its fellow islands. Gran Canaria

Winter and spring are the most popular time for visitors, with pleasant daytime temperatures for sunbathing and s…

La Gomera

La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands, little populated (around 20,000 people) but full of character. Misty forests, banana plantations, dramatic rock faces, secluded black sand beaches and a few small villages such as Valle Gran Rey contribute to its quiet appeal.
