Introduction
Ngwe Saung takes five hours to reach from Rangoon but is worth every bump in the road.
Quieter still than popular Ngapali Beach and further off the beaten track, the coast here is dominated by empty space: bare white-sand beaches, clear warm waters, small clusters of fishing villages and a handful of boutique resorts.
Away from the beach there's an elephant camp, which offers the chance of a ride into the jungle. A little closer to the ground, cycling is also a great way to explore.
