Visit Gunung Bromo
Gunung Bromo, an active volcano set among the bubbling peaks of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, is another of Indonesia's most breathtaking sights.
Although dwarfed by nearby Gunung Semeru, Java's highest mountain, Bromo still stands at an impressive 2,329 metres, and can easily be climbed by following a stone staircase up to the crater edge. A number of eruptions have occurred in recent years, so it's best to seek advice on the safety of any climb.
The best views of the Bromo landscape are almost certainly had at sunrise from the top of neighbouring Gunung Penanjakan (2,770 metres), when the colours are at their ethereal best.
