Wormsloe Plantation, Savannah

Georgia State

American history, brought to life

Visit Georgia

Introduction

From plantations and coastal islands to the Antebellum Trail and its storied past, Georgia has always been a fascinating destination. Charming towns deeply rooted in America's history give way to coastal regions of exceptional beauty and vast, protected scenic mountain areas dotted with cabins and cottages. For a break, its southern beaches are a real pleasure, as are its restaurant kitchens serving everything from hearty Southern favourites to fine-dining classics.

History brought to life

And, for a taste of Georgia past, head to Savannah, 18 miles from the coast. Its historic centre is packed with 18th and 19th century architectural gems that range from waterfront cotton warehouses to antebellum mansions all arranged around city squares. As the green lungs of Savannah, they’re resplendent in shady oaks twisting around ornate railings and shocking–pink azaleas that are picked out against sun-bleached brickwork. It’s this conspicuous wealth that was brought about by a chequered history that can still be seen in the Wormsloe Plantation Historic Site and Savannah History Museum.

Amazing Atlanta

Of course, there’s also the modern pull of Georgia’s forward-facing capital, Atlanta. A skyline dominated by towering skyscrapers is the backdrop to the fascinating Carter Center – dedicated to the presidency of Jimmy Carter – and the excellent High Museum of Art. You’ll also find a full range of family attractions including the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium. And, as the birthplace of Martin Luther King, it’s not just the architecture that’s progressive with plenty of exhibitions showcasing the life and legacy of one of the great Americans.

World-class sport, relaxation & culture

Outside of the cities, Augusta is the home of the US Masters and, with so many other world-renowned golf courses dotted throughout the state, it's no wonder that Georgia is a must-visit destination for golf fans. Elsewhere, the nation’s favourite Appalachian Trail runs through Georgia while the beaches of Jekyll Island – once the winter retreat for such names as the Morgans, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts – is one of the state’s favourite ‘vacation’ spots. Just to the north, the largest of the Golden Isles – St Simons Island – is an excellent choice for golf courses, charter fishing and resort living in an unspoilt location. For a glimpse back into the grand history of the Old South, Georgia’s Antebellum Trail takes in everything from botanical gardens and manors to cultural centres and authentic farms.
