About

Recommended for:
All-inclusive | Bucket-list holidays | Expedition cruise | Natural world | Ocean cruise | Off the beaten track

Visiting some of Patagonia's most spectacular national parks, from Torres del Paine to Tierra del Fuego, this all-inclusive luxury cruise offers an in-depth appreciation of Chile and Argentina's unique natural world. It all begins in modern Santiago and bohemian Valparaiso where you'll board your ultra-luxury ship to sail to Puerto Montt and Castro, gateway to the famed fjords of Patagonia. Explore with traditional horse farms, local wine tastings and private boat trips out to islands teeming with wildlife, including the famed Magellan penguins, before sailing on to the Chilean fjords, spotting breaching humpbacks, orcas and soaring eagles. As you sail further south, you'll explore the colossal Garibaldi fjord, ending at southernmost tip of South America, Ushuaia. Return each day to the delights of Silversea's Silver Wind. Expect butler-served suites, a heated pool, luxurious spa and four restaurants serving gourmet meals, paired with excellent Chilean and Argentinian wines, of course.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Santiago, Chile

Begin your trip in style with included VIP airport lounge access before boarding your overnight flight to Chile's capital, Santiago, arriving on day two.

Day 2
Santiago

On arrival, head to your hotel and check in for a one-night stay. Perhaps head out on a walking tour to explore – highlights include the Plaza de Armas at the heart of the city, home to the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral, as well as the city's attractive parks and excellent museums.

Stay: Santiago hotel

Day 3
Board Silver Wind at Valparaiso

After breakfast, head to the bohemian city of Valparaiso with your included transfer. Famed for its colourful clifftop homes, Valparaiso is full of colonial buildings and quirky architecture, with the famed vineyards of the Casablanca Valley just moments away. After exploring, head to the port to board the ultra-luxury Silver Wind. With a second refurbishment taking place this summer 2021, the ship will now feature an ice-class hull, making it even more adaptable to Antarctic conditions. Check in and unpack in your ultra-elegant stateroom with its own private teakwood veranda before heading to the bar for an expertly-mixed cocktail accompanied by spectacular sea views. Then, all that's left is to choose the dining venue for the first of your gourmet, included dinners – perhaps at La Dame, where seasonally-inspired dishes are served up using local ingredients – accompanied by an excellent Chilean wine list, of course.

You’ve got a full day at sea today to explore Silver Wind and all it has to offer. Perhaps head to the spa for a treatment, relax in the hot tub on the pool deck or whale watch before an alfresco lunch at the outdoor grill. Be sure to take advantage of the daily enrichment lectures, given by the highly qualified Expeditions Team, before heading to the show lounge after dinner, where everything from classic solo performances to feature films are on offer.

Day 5
Niebla, Chile

Anchor in to Niebla today, home to the famed Fort of Niebla that is now a historic monument. Explore with an included excursion – organised easily from the ship during or before your cruise – to explore the fort on foot, or sail along the Valdivia river to nearby Haverbeck Island, filled with ancient mansions and shipyards. Alternatively, spot diverse birdlife as you get up close to the misty forests and beautiful coastline with a kayaking trip, accompanied by the Silversea expedition team.

Day 6
Puerto Montt, Chile

After breakfast you'll have the chance to explore Puerto Montt, the gateway to both the Andes and Patagonian fjords, where modern architecture – this is Chile’s fastest growing city – contrasts with clapboard houses that perch high above the bay. Highlights include exploring Chile's oldest national park where you'll drive past the beautiful southern shores of Lake Llanquihue and its three surrounding volcanoes, as well as a visit to a traditional Chilean horse stud farm where you'll learn about Chilean food, music and the national sport of rodeo.

Day 7
Castro, Chile

You’ve got a full day to explore the capital of Chile’s Chiloe Island, today – Castro. Stroll among the colourful wooden palafitos huts that stand on stilts over the city’s waterfront – and don't miss a visit to the 70 UNESCO-listed wooden churches. If you'd like to explore further, why not take a tour of the unique Chiloé Island, pausing at local villages and wetlands filled with birdlife, or take a ferry over to the island of Quinchao, known for its pristine waters, excellent seafood and striped Magellan penguins. For an extra-special excursion, you could even head out on your own private boat, spotting dolphins, sea lions and hundreds of birds.

Day 8
At sea

With another full day at sea, perhaps head to the fitness centre to burn off any excess, go shopping at the boutique or simply relax with a book in the library. This evening, perhaps sample La Terrazza for authentic Italian fare, or go for local Chilean specialities in The Restaurant. It's all a perfect prelude to a digestif at the elegant Connoisseur Corner bar or thrilling night at the casino – or, head to the Observation Lounge, situated on the top deck, for stargazing under Chile's famous star-studded skies.

Day 9
Tortel, Chile

You've got the chance today to explore Patagonia proper as you anchor in to the spectacular wilderness of rugged mountains, glaciers, rivers and forests in Tortel. We'd highly recommend heading out kayaking with the Silversea team, spotting such wildlife as Andean fox, southern elephant seal, leopard seal, Chilean dolphin and humpback whales. Alternatively, head out on a Zodiac cruise to the world-famous Islas de Los Muertos. Tortel, home to just 530 people, is known as the 'footbridge city' for its wooden walkways that connect the piers and houses – explore as you head out along the walkways, built entirely on stilts, before joining in with the locals with a music and dance performance and sampling local food and drinks.

Spot the likes of fur seals, sea lions, dolphins and humpbacks, as well as a range of seabirds from skuas and gulls to cormorants, Magellanic penguins and Andean condors that soar amongst the mountain peaks.

Day 14
Punta Arenas, Chile

Anchor in to Punta Arenas today and what's known as the 'city at the end of the world’. Made up of islands, glacial fjords and mountains, this is the final stop before Antarctica and the famed Drake Passage – it even once welcomed the Ernest Shackleton in 1916. We'd highly recommend a boat trip from here to the famed uninhabited island of Magdalena, where more than 100,000 Magellanic penguins march among cormorants and gulls. Further highlights include exploring the Alberto de Agostini National Park and the renowned Torres del Paine National Park, where soaring mountains frame waterfalls and picturesque lakes. We'd also recommend a visit to a traditional estancia in the middle of the vast Patagonian pampas, where sheep farmers and Chilean cowboys on horseback will lead activities on the ranch in view of the spectacular Palomares mountains, finishing the evening with Pisco Sour cocktails, empanadas, barbecued Patagonian lamb and fine Chilean red wine.
