The wilds of Norway's relatively unexplored icy north are spectacularly discovered with this 13-day expedition voyage. It's the definition of unspoiled, where a surprising abundance of wildlife thrives among snow-covered peaks, glacial fjords and barren icy expanses. You'll start in the buzzing city of Tromso, where Northern Lights bathe looming mountains, giving way to vast nature reserves home only to enormous flocks of seabirds. You'll cruise the remote stretches of water around striking Bear Island and rugged Svalbard, observing polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes, humpback whales and seals in their natural habitat. A specially-built cruise ship pushes with ease through mighty ice floes as you observe the extraordinary flora and fauna among the isolated wilds, both on deck and with walks on sparkling frozen shores. And you'll do it all alongside the ultimate in luxury on the Silversea Silver Cloud Expedition ship that features four gourmet restaurants and sprawling suites, most of which boast personal verandas, enjoying expert lectures, opulent drinks lounges and an indulgent spa.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Tromso

After beginning your trip in style with included VIP airport lounge access, you’ll fly to the bustling Norwegian city of Tromso, where you'll take an included private transfer to your hotel. You’ve got the afternoon at leisure – perhaps take the chance to explore the ice-capped mountainous city with a visit to the world’s northernmost botanical gardens, where arctic and alpine plants sit alongside a fascinating Polar Museum. Then, perhaps start your evening with a visit to the Fiskekompaniet, where a ‘shellfish bar’ and restaurant serves delicious traditional dishes using fresh, local produce, before sampling Tromso's famous selection of pubs – there are more per capita than in any other Norwegian city. But that's not its most spectacular accolade – it's believed that the Northern Lights emerge more frequently here than any other Norwegian city, so keep an eye out and – luck depending – you may spot the psychedelic ballet in the night sky.

Stay: Tromso hotel

Day 2

After checking out of your hotel, you’ll take your included transfer to the port and embark the Silver Cloud Expedition ship. Its newly refurbished interiors and sprawling decks showcase a wonderful synchronisation between adventure and luxury, featuring ultra-personal service, a stunning pool deck and a veranda around almost all suites – it's a wonderful base from which to journey into the Arctic wilds. Tonight perhaps enjoy a drink at the opulent Dolce Vita bar before indulging in dinner at the fine French restaurant La Dame by Relais & Châteaux, or La Terrazza's authentic Italian menu.

Day 3

Today you’ll head to the Gjesverstappan Nature Reserve, characterised by looming bird cliffs comprised of steep, granite-coloured rocks. It's a barren but beautiful wilderness, home to one of Europe's largest colony of seabirds as well as playing host to enormous numbers of Atlantic puffins. Spot them from the boat’s Zodiacs, as well as gannets, eagles and cormorants, before heading to the blustery northernmost point of Europe’s mainland, Nordkapp. Observe reindeer grazing on the tundra dwarfed by the enormous mountain surrounds, before perhaps enjoying a fascinating lecture by one of the 22 onboard expedition experts.

Day 4
Bear Island

Entering the isolated archipelago of majestic Svalbard, you'll head to the desolate wilds of Bear Island at Svalbard's southernmost point. In spite of its name, it’s not home to a large number of bears – but some polar bears do arrive with winter’s ice, with a few staying in the warmer spring months. Witness its spectacular nature reserve, home to rugged high cliffs peppered with seabirds and puffins, before perhaps enjoying a relaxing spa treatment in the luxury wellness area of the ship.

Days 5-7
Svalbard’s southern region

High above the Arctic circle lies Svalbard, where polar bears outnumber people, dramatic fjords lace icy landscapes and ancient huts and settlements dot the shores. Due to the Gulf Stream it’s less ice-clogged than other areas, making for easier exploration – you'll likely spot walrus, seals, polar bears and seabirds. Zodiac landings and walks along icy shores bring you up close, before you head back on board to enjoy luxurious dinners on the Silver Cloud Expedition – perhaps enjoy the ocean views and seafood of The Grill, before hopefully catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the dark, clear skies.

Days 8-11
Svalbard's northern region

Today you'll venture even further north towards ever more dramatic scenery. You'll cruise past majestic sandstone mountains and glacial fjords before voyaging on Zodiacs along the imposing Monacobreen glacier, surrounded by seals, gulls, walrus and even roaming polar bears. The strong Silver Cloud Expedition’s hull has been perfectly designed to push through enormous packed ice floes, and as you arrive at the northern reaches of Svalbard you'll observe one of the widest glacier fronts in the northern hemisphere. Head out, weather depending, on cruises to explore flocks of birds on glacial islets, and explore several walrus haul-outs with walks and hikes on the spectacular shores. In the evenings, enjoy cognac tasting, boutique shopping and drinks in the opulent lounges with new friends for your last evenings onboard.

Day 12

Heading south sees you arrive at Svalbard’s largest settlement, Longyearbyen, characterised by colourful tiny houses dwarfed by the majestic surrounding landscape. After disembarking, explore the town with a visit to the Svalbard Museum to learn about the fascinating history of the region, before spotting roaming polar bears and maybe even that revered dancing lightshow before transferring to Oslo for an overnight stay.

Stay: Oslo hotel
