Between iconic cities and a spectacular natural world, Australia and New Zealand are a natural pairing. The rural serenity of the Fiordlands is answered by Tasmania, dolphins are matched by kangaroos and Auckland does its best to keep up with Sydney and Melbourne. That’s without mentioning the countries’ shared love of vineyards. It’s all showcased in ultra-luxury, with an all-inclusive spread of gourmet fine dining and open champagne bars.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2
Depart UK

Begin your trip in style with complimentary airport access before your flight out to Australia.

Day 3

Arriving into Sydney, you’ll be met by an included transfer for the short trip to your luxury hotel. And, although you might be tempted by a spa treatment, the hotel’s sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House might just tempt you out for a waterfront walk. But, Australia’s largest city is so much more than its icons. Perhaps wander the cobblestone streets of the historic Rocks district, get out to the golden sands of Bondi or sample Sydney’s famous restaurant scene.

Stay: Shangri-La, Sydney (Deluxe)

Days 4-5
Depart Sydney

You’ll have some further time to explore Sydney today before you board your luxury ship – the Silver Muse. With a following day at sea, there’s plenty of time to explore its industry-leading facilities; expect everything from a gorgeous pool, arts café and gym to a casino, spa and library. That’s without even mentioning the Venetian Lounge, host to recitals and full-scale productions. Beginning with dinner on the first day, you’ll also settle in to all-inclusive fine dining. Highlights include sushi delicacies, just-caught seafood and French fine dining, all washed down with free-flowing champagne and cocktails.

Day 6

Your first port of call is Melbourne. Although you’ll be greeted by a spectacular skyline, you’ll quickly lose yourself among the Victorian laneways that intersect its glass-and-steel shimmer. Here, gold-rush architecture today hosts fashionable boutiques, bars and restaurants. Perhaps book on to a tasting tour to make the most of it all. Otherwise, consider taking in the city’s sporting fanaticism with visits to the hallowed cricket, tennis and Aussie rules grounds. There’s even the opportunity to take a vintage steam train out into the Dandenong Mountains or drive along the famous Great Ocean Road, whose coastal sweep showcases truly dramatic rock formations.

Day 7
Burnie, Tasmania

You’ll make land in Tasmania with Burnie. Although Tasmania’s fourth-largest city impresses with an intriguing industrial past and a vibrant, creative present, we highly recommend turning out to take in the island’s rural spectacle. Wing’s Wildlife Park is a particular highlight for its wildlife icons. Think kangaroos, emus and, yes, Tasmanian devils. Scenic drives will also bring you between rolling countryside and cragged coasts to head into limestone caves and pause at 19th-century estates that remember all of Tasmanian’s settler history. And, all this pretty natural world has lent itself to resurgent wineries and farmers’ markets, showcased in tasting visits.

Days 8-9
At Sea

Hopping over to New Zealand, you’ll have two days at sea to relax and make the most of your luxury ship. You’ll just have to tear yourself away from your butler-served suite, whose marbled accents, picture windows and complimentary minibar make for a truly opulent stay. However, once you do, you’ll be treated to everything from open bars to dance and language classes. Be sure to find some time to relax in the Sun Deck’s Jacuzzis or pick out a good book from the library.

Day 10
Milford Sound

You’ll make your introductions to New Zealand with two days spent cruising the Fiordlands. This spectacular region is a wild tumble of mountain ranges, dense rainforests and alpine rivers, forming some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. Indeed, starting with Milford Sound, you can expect any rain to form spectacular waterfalls on nearly every cliff-face. Counterintuitively, it may be the only time you’ll look forward to bad weather.

Day 11
Doubtful Sound

You’ll continue your fjord exploration today with Doubtful Sound – named for Captain Cook’s about turn. But today, while lesser-visited and three times larger than its Milford sibling, Doubtful Sound is perfect for exploration. Indeed, as it’s more remote, few make the trip out but those that do are rewarded with glassy waters, green-dappled peaks and forested islands. As with yesterday, you might even be treated to bottlenose dolphins and the rare whale.

Day 12
Port Chalmers (Dunedin)

Looping round the bottom of the South Island, you’ll arrive into Port Chalmers. This artsy gem, all cafés and galleries, is the perfect launchpad for trips on to Dunedin. Termed New Zealand’s ‘Scottish city’, you can expect Victorian architecture, weatherboard houses and the iconic white-stone of its St Paul’s Cathedral. It’s even named Edinburgh in Gaelic. Otherwise, explore with a scenic rail journey, hopping gorges and plunging through fertile plains, or hit the waters with a kayak paddle to spot penguins and fur seals. You might also want to head out on a hike up Mt. Cargill, looking down onto harbours and bays from forest trails.

Day 13

Watched over by volcanic cliffs and rolling grasslands alike, Akaroa is one of New Zealand’s prettiest harbours. But, it’s not just for show, with spectacular coastal drives, hikes and cruises seeing you right among the scenery. You might even spot the odd dolphin and fur seal. Visits to its superb museums will also bring its unique history – both Maori and colonial – to life, while you might even want to book on to a cooking course right on Akaroa’s wharf. You’ll learn how to prepare the finest in locally sourced seafood, pairing it with fine New Zealand wines. Alternatively, Christchurch’s English heritage is just a short hop away.

Stay: Silver Muse (Deluxe)

Day 14

As the gateway to the South Island’s north, Picton enjoys a pretty setting, sandwiched between glittery waters and green hills. It’s scenery explored on dolphin-spotting cruises and bush hikes, while the next-door Marlborough and Blenheim regions impress with some of the country’s finest wines. Perhaps book on to a guided tour to taste your way through their exquisite vineyards. Otherwise, excursions can lead you between mussel farms, aviation museums, English gardens and that New Zealand favourite – a remote sheep station.

Day 15

The silver lining of Napier’s tragic earthquake of 1931 is a city rebuilt in classic, Art-Deco beauty. Strolling down its streets, you’ll pass pretty facades that house a heritage of newspapers and tobacco companies; it’s a step right back to the early 20th century. For the most evocative way to take it all in, book onto a tour in a classic car. Otherwise, take in the natural splendour of Hawke’s Bay on a cruise or helicopter flight while the Napier Rotary is perfect for cyclists, with the trail leading between orchards and quaint towns. Of course, there’s also plenty of opportunity to sample the local viticulture.

Stay: Silver Muse (Deluxe)

Day 16

Continuing along the North Island’s eastern coast, you’ll arrive into Gisborne. Maori for “Great standing place of Kiwa”, it’s steeped in unique heritage, showcased in the Tairawhiti Museum. Gisborne even proudly claims to be the first city on Earth to see the sun; be sure to take in the rays with a glass of chardonnay on a winery tour. There are also rays to be spotted underwater, with a reef tour offering the chance to watch stingrays being fed.

Stay: Silver Muse (Deluxe)

Days 17-18

Ending in Auckland, you’ll immediately understand how it got the nickname “City of Sails” with its waterfront of gleaming ships. Approximately a quarter of Auckland households have their own seacraft. Then, other than seafront walks, there’s the superb Auckland Museum with its neoclassical beauty and spectacular city views from One Tree Hill – once the site of the country’s greatest Maori fortress. Otherwise, leave the city limits behind to discover pretty beaches, vineyard islands and volcanic mountains.
