Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2
UK/Stockholm, Sweden

Begin in style with complimentary airport lounge access before your flight out to Stockholm. On arrival, a private transfer will see you to your luxury accommodation, all chandeliers, champagne bars and 18th-century grandeur. Centrally located, it’s also perfectly positioned to explore the Swedish capital. While you’ll know Stockholm for its cutting-edge design scene and fine contemporary galleries, it’s also wrapped in unique history, with its Gamla Stan old town a storybook vision of cathedrals, cobbled streets and golden palaces. Together, it’s one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval centres. At the end of it all, you’ll certainly have earned that soak in the hotel’s sauna.

Stay: King's Garden Hotel (Superior)

Days 3-4
Depart Stockholm

Today, a private driver will see you aboard your luxury ship – the Silver Wind. Starting with dinner on the first night, you’ll settle in to a menu of all-inclusive indulgences, ranging from casual grills to fine dining by Relais & Châteaux. It’s all washed down with champagne and cocktails from the open bars. You’ll also have a full day at sea to acquaint yourself with the ship’s superb facilities, with the spa, library and fitness centre among the highlights. The Show Lounge is another favourite, host to full-scale productions and expert-led lectures. Then, at day’s end, return to your marbled suite to enjoy butler service and a complimentary mininbar, tailored to your tastes.

Days 5-6
St. Petersburg, Russia

As Russia’s imperial capital, St. Petersburg was built looking west, with its great cathedrals and ornate palaces rivalling any in Europe. Indeed, much of it was commissioned, by St. Peter the Great, from the finest Continental architects of the 18th century. It’s also something of an artistic powerhouse, with the Hermitage host to everything from Picasso abstracts to Egyptian mummies. Then, there’s the famous ballet, opera and classical concerts to take in. And, spread over some hundred islands that dot the Neva Delta, the city enjoys a delightfully scenic backdrop, built around pretty canals and arched bridges.

Day 7
Tallinn, Estonia

Estonia’s Tallinn is a city of many influences. A Hanseatic hub, historic wealth from German and Danish merchants has beautified its spectacular old town. Here, Gothic churches, winding cobblestones and imposing city walls form a truly atmospheric medieval centre. The Toompea, the German knights’ hilltop stronghold, is a special favourite, while the Middle Ages warehouses add further intrigue and imposing manors remember its time under Soviet rule. Lastly, the city also offers a unique spread of culinary experiences, showcased with cooking lessons and tasting visits in local markets.

Day 8
Turku, Finland

Hopping over the Gulf of Finland, you’ll arrive into Turku, the country’s oldest town. It’s a fact beautifully evidenced by its pair of icons – the Turun Linna Castle and Tuomiokirkko Cathedral. Both date back to the 13th century, with the former’s stern walls softened by the latter’s beautifully whitewashed curves, capped by golden crucifixes. But, the city isn’t just stuck in the medieval period, with its welcoming cafés and hip bars animated by a lively student scene. Turku is also a gateway to its eponymous archipelago, with scenic cruises bringing you among countless cragged islets.

Day 9
Västervik, Sweden

It’s then back to Sweden with Västervik where the vast forests of northeastern Småland meet the rugged cliffs of the east coast’s only archipelago town. Here, more than 5,000 islands, islets and rocks make for an adventurers’ paradise, with everything from climbing and kayaking on offer. There are even seals and sea eagles to spot, along with fishing expeditions to head out on. Alternatively, take things easy with a stroll along the town’s picturesque waterfront, admiring the iconic red of the fisherman’s houses and perhaps pausing for lunch at one of the superb seafood restaurants. Just leave time to take in Stegeholm Castle, a 14th-century ruin perched on its very own island.

Day 10
Bornholm, Denmark

Your next stop is Denmark’s Bornholm, an island gem of white-sand beaches, dense forests and towering cliffs. Then, medieval fortress ruins and thatched fishing villages add a touch of human intrigue, not least for the emblematic rundkirker round churches. It all makes for arrestingly scenic hikes. There’s also a chance to visit the local craft workshops where you can take in the region’s famous glassblowing over a glass of champagne. Then, back in the port of Rønne, you can spend a very happy afternoon simply strolling along its cobblestone streets, passing quaint half-timber houses and pausing at superb seafood restaurants.

Day 11
Warnemünde, Germany (Berlin)

You’ll next make land in Germany with quaint Warnemünde. Sited on 12 miles of pristine sands, it’s long been renowned as an idyllic summertime getaway, not least for its excellent restaurants housed in historic cottages. In between, take some time to wander along its boat-dotted canal and enjoy the sweeping views from its turn-of-the-century lighthouse. Warnemünde is also a jumping off point for microbrewery river cruises and excursions into Berlin, with a scenic countryside transfer bringing you among the German capital’s rich heritage. There’s everything from the Reichstag’s imperial might and the Brandenburg Gate’s neoclassical severity to the Berlin Wall’s Checkpoint Charlie and the extravagantly rococo Charlottenburg Palace.

Stay: Silver Wind (Deluxe)

Day 12
Travemünde

It’s then on for some relaxation in Travemünde. It’s not hard to see why this historic resort was a favourite of Thomas Mann, with its long sands marking the point where the River Trave flows into the Baltic Sea. In between relaxing on the beach and indulging with the just-caught seafood, make time for such water-sport excitement as boating, fishing and windsurfing. Alternatively, scenic walks will bring you out of Travemünde’s churches and tree-lined streets and along a picturesque coastline. There’s even Germany’s oldest lighthouse to take in.

Days 13-14
Copenhagen

You’ll end your cruise in the Danish capital, where a private driver will meet you for the short journey to your central accommodation. A perfect summation of Copenhagen’s unique charms, it’s an 1805 brick warehouse – complete with exposed timber beams – that’s been converted into a designer hotel. What’s more, found right on the city’s historic waterfront, you’ll be perfectly poised to explore. From Viking treasures housed in a grand palace and exotic artwork framed in neoclassical mansions to a cutting-edge design scene and innovative restaurants famous the world over, be sure to give past and present equal weight.

Stay: 71 Nyhavn, Copenhagen (Superior)

Day 15
