Exploring remote gold rush towns in Alaska’s wilderness and hiking through Canada’s picturesque Rockies – you’ll experience both on this ultra-scenic rail and cruise trip. Buzzing cosmopolitan cities and historic gold rush towns sit alongside deep fjords where bears roam the shores and enormous chunks of glacial ice crash into the ocean. You’ll start this epic trip in historic Anchorage on board the luxurious Silversea Silver Shadow, before speeding over dramatic canyons and vast lakes on the deluxe Rocky Mountaineer to conclude your journey in Banff, the jewel of the Canadian Rockies.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Anchorage

After a relaxed start to your trip with included VIP airport lounge access, you’ll board an overnight flight to the culture hub of Anchorage. A city of adventure, take advantage of its location and head out for a short hike in the wilderness surrounds, or explore a state park, many of which lie quite literally in the city’s backyard. Then, check in to your hotel for the evening, Captain Cook, where the stunning Chugach Mountains serve as your backdrop.

Stay: Hotel Captain Cook (Superior)

Day 2

After breakfast overlooking the city, you'll transfer to the luxurious Silver Shadow. Check in to your deluxe suite before relaxing in the outdoor heated whirlpool, or enjoy an Italian lunch on deck as you cruise through the spectacular Seward region. A gateway to the vast Kenai Fjords National Park, Seward is a historic port city at the head of the imposing Resurrection Bay, framed by mountains and fjords – keep an eye out for whales and porpoises. Beyond its beauty lies a town steeped in history – its official inception in 1903 was particularly significant, when crews arrived at the port and built the town’s integral Alaska Central Railway. Since then, tourism and fishing have remained an important part of the town’s heritage. Enjoy exploring Seward before stepping back on board Silver Shadow – perhaps enjoy a spa treatment before taking advantage of one of the three gourmet restaurants.

Day 3
Hubbard Glacier

Today you’ll sail east to this mighty natural phenomenon. Glaciers are synonymous with Alaska’s natural landscape, and the vast expanse of the Hubbard Glacier is one of the most noteworthy as the largest of its kind in North America. It lies at six miles wide at the point where it meets the ocean, and in recent years has had two major surges that turned the fjord into a lake and threatened to flood the town. You’re likely to see it calve, which it still does frequently – watch as enormous chunks of ice break off and crash into the water below.

Day 4

After a spectacular cruise south passing immense glacier-carved national parks, you’ll reach Juneau. This sleepy capital is inaccessible by road, but its remoteness makes it all the more appealing. Take in the mighty Mendenhall Glacier via helicopter or take a trip out on the water where spotting orcas and humpbacks is almost guaranteed. And don’t be alarmed if you spot a black bear roaming the streets – this is a common sight to Juneau, as are moose foraging in local forests and bald eagles congregating where salmon spawn in swarms.

Day 5

Green forests edged by snowy peaks will be your backdrop during a relaxing few hours at sea, after which you’ll reach the gold rush port town of Skagway. This friendly community has the Klondike Gold Rush at the heart of its heritage, and you’ll find remnants round every restored saloon, trail and museum. Explore the eponymous national park, take a historic walking tour, or hike part of the The Chilkoot Trail, ‘the world’s longest outdoor museum’ that serves as the beginning of the trail leading to the famous Yukon goldfields.

Day 6

After sailing south, you’ll arrive at the historic town of Sitka. Spectacularly surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks and rainforest, Sitka’s wilderness is shared with not only a plethora of wildlife, but a rich cultural heritage, with reminders of its Russian colonizers present throughout the town’s historical sites. There’s a palpable sense of island community – embrace it with traditional dances and totem trails through the forest, and explore its wilderness with trips to remote fishing holes, ancient volcanoes or hikes on mountain ridges.

Days 7-8
Ketchikan/Inside Passage

Offering old-town charm in abundance, its proud sense of heritage is projected in 20-foot-tall native Alaskan totem collections. As one of Alaska’s finest fishing towns, don’t miss the chance to reel in some fresh salmon, the practice of which is a vital part of this town’s history. Colourful restored buildings and soaring bald eagles provide the backdrop for strolls along eclectic Creek Street and observing the vast Misty Fjords National Monument. After leaving Ketchikan, spend day 8 on a relaxing cruise of the Inside Passage, taking in the magnificent scenery of enormous native Sitka trees, immense glaciers, carpeted islands and endless forest, home to whales, eagles, and sea lions.

The rest of the day is free for you to explore – perhaps board a gondola for a ride up to Grouse Mountain’s peak on the thrilling Skyride, or stroll through the dense forests of Stanley Park before checking into your hotel for the night, Fairmont Waterfront. Enjoy sweeping views of the ocean and coastal mountains in the distance with the stylish eateries of historic Gastown just moments away.
