Along the way, you’ll take in the island idyll of both Menorca and Corsica, the glitz of Monte Carlo and the charm of the French and Italian rivieras where a fascinating heritage plays out among a stunning natural world. And, either side, you’ll enjoy equally luxurious stays in two city greats – Barcelona and Rome.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2
UK to Barcelona

Begin your trip with complimentary airport lounge access before your flight out to Barcelona. On arrival in the Catalan capital, you’ll be met by a private driver who’ll bring you to your luxury accommodation. Set next door to the city’s spectacular 15th-century cathedral, its rooftop bar and infinity pool offers truly stunning views over Barcelona’s iconic skyline. As such, you’ll be perfectly sited to explore, with everything from plaza-side tapas bars and sun-dappled beaches to Gaudí’s great architectural whimsies and the Gothic Quarter’s impressive churches on your doorstep. Each day, return to the art gallery and spa treatments of your hotel.

Stay: Grand Hotel Central, Barcelona (Deluxe)

Day 3

Today, a private transfer will see you to your luxury ship – the Seabourn Encore. Here, you’ll be welcomed to your suite’s private balcony, marble bathroom and walk-in closet by a glass of champagne as you settle in to enjoy the services of a personal stewardess – a hallmark of Seabourn’s club-like atmosphere. The indulgence continues with open bars and all-inclusive dining from Michelin-standard restaurants. You’ll also be treated to the likes of teakwood-framed pools and private cabanas while, below deck, there are chandelier-lit bars, a casino and performance venues. Lastly, for some relaxation, head to the superb spa whose ocean views are shared by its gym.

Day 4

Your first port of call is Mahon – the capital of Menorca. Quieter than its island cousins, it’s a Balearic gem complete with laid-back beaches and gorgeous coastlines that hide the remnants of Bronze Age settlements. Indeed, Mahon is host to a fascinating history, with everyone from the Moors and the Romans to the British and the French having staked their claims. It’s all remembered in the likes of colonial walls and Spanish fortresses from the 1700s. If your turn inland, however, you’ll find all of rustic island life alive in quaint villages set apart by rolling hills gashed with wooded ravines.

Day 5
Marseille, France

Marseille is one of the Mediterranean’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with cave paintings at next-door Calanques National Park dating back some 30 millennia. You’ll make land at La Joliette to take in its impressively Romanesque Cathédrale de la Major before turning in to discover its old port, the Haussmannian architecture of the République quarter and the famous cuisine of its regional restaurants. You might also want to turn out to journey through the idyllic Provençal countryside to uncover pretty villages, a world-famous wine region and Avignon’s Papal Palace, one of Europe’s largest and most important medieval buildings.

Day 6
St. Tropez

Sailing along the French Riviera you’ll arrive into one of its prettiest sections – the white-sand frame to St. Tropez. Although long the haunt for journalists, writers and photographers, this jewel was popularised by painters with names like Matisse, Signac and Marquet, who fell for the town’s jewellery-box collection of fishing boats, colourful houses and terracotta-capped buildings. It all makes for evocative strolls, with long afternoons whiled away in galleries, antique shops and cafés that spill out into the street.

Day 7
Ajaccio, Corsica

Hopping over to Corsica, you’ll drop anchor at Ajaccio where you’ll be welcomed by idyllic beaches that range from narrow crescents to great golden expanses. But, if you move inland, the landscape breaks up into snaggletooth peaks, plunging gorges and great forested swathes dotted with hilltop villages. Discover it all with hiking and kayak trips or taste your way through the island’s unique gastronomy. There’s the rich produce of nougat factories, oil distilleries and honey-bee farms to sample. However, whichever you choose, you’ll discover a fiercely independent Corsican identity, best taken in with a glass of local wine and an impromptu choral performance.

Day 8
Monte Carlo, Monaco

Calling into Monaco, your next stop is Monte Carlo. The epitome of Riviera chic, this hedonists’ playground is a homage to excess, summed up by movie-star glitz of the Casino de Monte Carlo. And, in among its glass-and-steel grandeur, there’s such highlights as the Jardin Exotique, the spectacular Prince’s Palace and the 9th-century Romanesque-Byzantine Cathedrale de Monaco. You might also want to head out on an optional excursion to Nice’s old-world opulence and St. Paul de Vence – a medieval walled village whose narrow streets are looked down upon by tall ramparts.

Stay: Seabourn Encore (Deluxe)

Day 9
Portovenere, Italy

It’s then on to Italy and Portovenere. While St. Tropez had its artists, this harbourfront village is the preserves of poets, from Dante and Petrarch to Byron and Shelley. And, it’s no surprise that these great minds were so captured, with its elongated yellow and orange houses stretching serenely up its natural incline towards ancient battlements. It’s all fronted by a trio of picturesque islands and capped by a magnificent, 12th-century castle whose UNESCO-listed ramparts tower over the town below. Alternatively, you’ll have the option of an excursion to Pisa to take in its leaning icon, fading merchants’ houses and 900-year-old marble cathedral.

Days 10-11

Arriving into Civitavecchia, you’ll be met by a private driver who’ll see you to your luxury hotel in Rome – the De Russie. Designed in the early 1800s, it’s played host to the likes of one Pablo Picasso, who would certainly be impressed today by its artsy design, mosaicked marble bathrooms and nearly 3,000 square metres of palm-fringed gardens. Sited on the Via del Babuino, you’ll also have all of the Italian capital’s highlights within easy reach, including the Spanish Steps and the bright verdure of the Villa Borghese. Alternatively, take in the Vatican’s splendour or step back even further in time with the Roman Forum and the Coliseum.

Stay: De Russie, Rome (Deluxe)
