All-inclusive | Food & wine | Natural world | Ocean cruise | Off the beaten track

You’ll start by circumnavigating Iceland, with your coastal cruise, luxury Reykjavik stay and two full-day jeep tours showcasing everything from glaciers and waterfalls to whales and explosive geysers. You’ll then head off the beaten track with stops among the wild landscapes and historic frontier towns of the Faroe, Orkney and Shetland islands before you arrive into Scotland. Here, imposing castles guard over the great cities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh – your final stop before you end on London’s Thames.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-3

After beginning your holiday with complimentary airport lounge access, board your flight out to Iceland where a private transfer will see you to your luxury hotel – an Art Deco landmark complete with spa. In between time to explore Reykjavik’s colourful heritage and design fineries, we’ve included a pair of full-day tours by luxury jeep. The first will drive the Golden Circle, taking in everything from giant geysers and cascading waterfalls to glacier off-roading and Thingvellir National Park’s sweeping rift valley. It’s host to ruins of the world’s first parliament. The next day, you’ll head to the remote south coast, weaving between black-sand beaches, idyllic fishing villages and bird cliffs to showcase the monumental Eyjafjallajökull Volcano.

Day 4
Depart Reykjavik

With your hotel set just back from the harbour, you’ll almost be able to step right on to your luxury ship – the Silver Wind. Here, you’ll settle in to your marbled suite to enjoy picture-window views, butler service and a complimentary minibar, tailored to your tastes. The all-inclusive indulgences continue into the superb selection of restaurants, with hot-rock grills and fine dining by Relais & Châteaux among the highlights. Then, after making use of the spa, library and fitness centre or catching a full-scale production in the Show Lounge, perhaps end the day with champagne or cocktails in the open bars.

Day 5

Heading clockwise around Iceland, your first port of call is Isafjordur, a remote fjord town watched over by a pair of colossal rock terraces. But, aside from its welcoming cafés and excellent seafood restaurants, it’s also an ideal gateway to the adventurers’ playground that is northwestern Iceland. Skiing, climbing, and fjord hikes rank among the highlights, while boat cruises bring you out for puffin islands, excellent whale watching and eerily abandoned ghost towns. Alternatively, head out to a nearby fishing village for an insight into local life, paired with seafood tasting.

Day 6

Your next stop is Akureyri – the ‘Capital of the North’. Here, 19th-century wooden houses and the twin spires of its Lutheran church – a modern Art-Deco masterpiece – enjoy a spectacular setting, surrounded by mountains on three sides and hemmed in by a 60km-long fjord. Excursions here will see you between cascading waterfalls, lava fields and lunar-crater landscapes of steaming fumaroles and bubbling hot pools. A trip to the geothermally heated Myvatn Nature Baths is a particular favourite; it’s a Blue Lagoon without the crowds. There’s even the option of a panoramic flight out to a remote island.

Day 7

Continuing round, you’ll arrive into Seydisfjördur. This 19th-century village is considered to be one of Iceland’s most picturesque, its collection of perfectly preserved wooden buildings framed by glacially carved mountains. It’s all founded on a rich trading past, with everyone from the Danes to the Norwegians having left their mark. As such, it’s host to a surprisingly diverse culture, evident across artist boutiques, craft workshops and classical concerts held in its delightful, pastel-blue church. The nearby waterfalls are equally impressive.

Day 8
At Sea

With a day at sea, you’ll have some time to relax on board. Enjoy a movie matinee, have a look round the designer boutiques, lose yourself in the library or try your luck at the casino or card room. The Connoisseur’s Lounge is a special favourite, where you can enjoy fine cognacs and premium cigars. There’s also plenty to get involved with, from wine tastings to language and dance classics.

Day 9
Thorshavn, Faroe Islands

Having crossed over from Iceland, you’ll arrive today in the Faroe Islands with Thorshavn. Although delightfully off the beaten track, you’ll be treated to truly epic landscapes with undulating sheep pastures rolling down into dramatic cliffs and up into cragged mountain peaks. Whether hiking, driving or cruising, you’ll be treated to everything from waterfalls and glaciers to sea stacks and glassy lakes. But, the 18 islands are also host to an intriguing human history, evidenced across ancient structures, medieval churches and frontier villages.

Day 10
Lerwick, Shetland Islands

Returning to the UK, you’ll make land in the Shetland Islands with Lerwick. Founded by Dutch fishermen in the 17th century, handsome stone buildings – known as lodberries – line the harbour. Once used as smugglers’ warehouses, today they’re charming homes. It all makes for delightful strolls through the town, admiring the historic stone architecture that lines the twisting flagstone lanes. Alternatively, head out on a scenic drive to take in pony-dotted fields, jewellery workshops, thousand-year-old roundhouses and the 17th-century Scalloway Castle.

Day 11
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

The Orkney Islands are an archipelago of enormous beauty, where sandy beaches and red sandstone cliffs front green-topped tablelands. It’s a pretty background to ancient standing stones, prehistoric villages and idyllic port towns. You’ll make land in Kirkwall, where twisting lanes date back to the 11th century and the medieval cathedral and its accompanying palaces. The excursions here are also particularly intriguing, with whiskey tastings, coastal drives and visits to archaeological sites among the many highlights.

Stay: Silver Wind (Deluxe)

Day 12

It’s then on to mainland Scotland and Aberdeen. A delightfully attractive city, it owes much of its beauty to the silvery-grey granite quarried nearby between the 18th and 20th centuries. Although the best local examples are the beautifully arched cathedral and the cutesy Crathie Church, the stone has graced the likes of London’s Waterloo Bridge and the Houses of Parliament. There’s also a superb maritime museum and the treasures of the Aberdeen Art Gallery before the chance to turn out to Dunnottar Castle – a ruined medieval fortress perched on a cragged peninsula.

Stay: Silver Wind (Deluxe)

Meals: B L D

Day 13

Sweeping south, you’ll then arrive into Edinburgh. Spread over a series of rocky hills, its winding laneways weave between Georgian houses, 16th-century palaces and medieval tenements. It’s all watched over by the iconic Edinburgh Castle, a stern fortress that defines the city’s skyline. That’s not to say, however, that Edinburgh is stuck in the past. The beautifully modern Scottish Parliament and a score of excellent museums and galleries see to that. And, the fashionable set of its bars and pubs are certainly living in the present.

Day 14
At Sea

A last day at sea affords a final chance to unwind with the ship’s facilities. But, if you tire of relaxing by the pool and indulging with the free-flowing cocktails, simply retire to your suite to take in a good movie. And remember, along with the usual productions, you can expect the Show Lounge to put on the likes of classical soloists and expert-led lectures, focused on your route’s destinations.

Stay: Silver Wind (Deluxe)

Meals: B L D

Day 15
London (Tower Bridge)

Sailing up the Thames itself, you’ll dock next to the iconic stonework of Tower Bridge. As such, you’ll have all of the Capital’s delights on your doorstep. Perhaps take a stroll along the South Bank to take in the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament or catch a show in the West End where many of the world’s finest productions have got their starts. Then there are the museums, where everything from the Empire’s treasures to the advances of modern science are showcased. Perhaps cap it all off with a meal at one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants.
