Day by day itinerary

Days 1-4

Flying to Keflavik, you’ll transfer to Iceland’s capital and your landmark accommodation, the Art Deco Hotel Borg. Located in the heart of the city, across from the Icelandic parliament and Reykjavik Cathedral, its stylish rooms and indulgent spa provide the perfect base for three days of exploration including whale-watching trips, Blue lagoon soaks and 4x4 tours out to the Golden Circle, a region home to spurting geysers and dramatic waterfalls. Then, on day four, you’ll transfer to your luxury ship, Silver Cloud, to begin your cruise to Greenland.

Days 5-6
At Sea / Skjoldungen

A day at sea provides the chance to relax onboard, waking up in your butler-served suite to Relais & Châteaux-inspired dining, Show Lounge entertainment, a climate-controlled swimming pool and the indulgences of an onboard spa. There’s also a Zodiac briefing and a Welcome Aboard cocktail party in the company of the ship’s captain, his senior officers and the experts who’ll accompany you throughout your voyage. Then, as you arrive into Skjoldungen on Greenland’s east cost, giant icebergs and snow-dusted peaks guide you past the Thrym Glacier and into a fjord, home to humpback, fin and minke whales.

Day 7
Prins Christian Sund / Aapilattoq

Sail past calving glaciers and sculpted blocks of ice as you head south to Prins Christian Sund for a Zodiac tour, followed by a guided walk through the Inuit settlement of Aapilattoq. Home to just 130 hardy locals, its church, school and scattering of houses provide a unique insight into life in this inhospitable outpost.

Day 8
Nanortalik / Uunartoq

Call into Nanortalik, the ‘place of polar bears’, where local Inuits will present a kayak demonstration. Then, in the afternoon, you’ll drop anchor at Uunartoq for a soak in the bubbling hot springs, followed by a Zodiac encounter with the region’s colossal icebergs.

Day 9
Qaqortoq / Hvalsey

Arrive into Qaqortoq whose hillside of colourful houses provides a pleasing contrast to the stark white landscapes of the previous days. Here, a local guide will introduce you the country’s oldest fountain, built in 1928, which takes pride of place in the town’s main square. There’s also time to visit the town’s two churches and call into the open-air fish market, while the small museum hosts artefacts that range from whalers’ guns to a collection of contemporary local artwork.

Day 10
Qassiarsuk / Ittileq

Your next port of call is Qassiarsuk. A village home to a wealth of Norse ruins, its highlights include the foundations of the manor house that once belonging to Erik the Red, who founded Greenland’s first Norse settlement. You’ll also visit the site of the country’s first Christian church and see a recently unearthed graveyard, containing the remains of 144 Norse colonists. Then, in the afternoon, cruise north to Ittileq where a where a guided walk will bring you to the ruins of Garðar, the religious heartland of 12th-century Norse Greenland.

Days 11-12
At sea / Nuuk

Enjoy a further day at sea as your expedition team present a series of informative lectures as you prepare for your arrival into Greenland’s modern-day capital, Nuuk. Here, a leisurely stroll through the harbour will introduce you not only the beauty of the town’s setting, but also its rich history, showcased in fascinating detail at the excellent Greenlandic National Museum. In the afternoon, you’ll relax on board as the ship’s videographer presents the Voyage DVD before a final evening on board and, perhaps, the chance to see the Northern Lights in the skies overhead.

Days 13-14

Steer between the near-vertical frame of Kangerlussuaq fjord before disembarking for a flight back into the Icelandic capital. On arrival, a private transfer will bring you back to Hotel Borg for the night before your flight home to the UK on day 14.
