Day 1
Depart for Chile

Begin your holiday in suitable style with included airport lounge access before your overnight flight to Chile’s capital, Santiago.

Day 2
Santiago

On arrival you will be met and transferred by shared vehicle to a hotel for an overnight stay. Spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the city. With its eclectic neighbourhoods, lively bars, superb restaurants and several excellent museums and galleries, there's much to see and do in Chile's vibrant, if often smoggy capital. If you do get a clear day, head up to Santa Lucia Hill, whose stairways, framed by ornate façades and fountains, wind upwards to stunning views across the city skyline and its surrounding ring of Andean peaks. ,

Day 3
Valparaiso

Check out of the hotel and a shared transfer will bring you west from the capital to the Pacific coast city of Valparaiso and your luxury expedition ship, Silver Explorer. Here, you’ll be introduced to the ship’s facilities and attend a safety drill before a special sail away party introduces you to the sights of the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ with its artsy hilltop neighbourhoods and UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town. Then, in the evening, you’ll meet your Expedition Team before enjoying a specially prepared feast in the ship’s main restaurant.

Day 4
Cruising the Humboldt Current

Your first morning on board is one of pure relaxation as you settle in to life on board. Perhaps head to the Theatre for an introductory talk on Chile’s unique natural world, with a focus on the highlights of Valdivia and the Chilean Lakes. Then, take in the views from the deck as you sail the Humboldt Current, or relax with a treatment in the spa before sampling the local speciality ceviche in its many forms, prepared to perfection by the ship’s team of talented chefs.

Day 5
Niebla

This morning you’ll drop anchor at Corral Bay where trips out to the small village of Niebla, home to a 17th century fortress, and the port city of Valdivia where you’ll showcase the region’s heritage with its unique blend of Spanish, German and native Mapuche influences. There’s also the chance to take a catamaran cruise on the pretty Rio Valdivia, and to tuck into the region’s culinary speciality – fresh fish and crab. In the afternoon, return to Silver Explorer to enjoy expert lectures on the Chilean Lakes as you sail towards Puerto Montt.

Day 6
Puerto Montt

Today is the start of your excursions to the spectacular Lake District. Highlights include the Petrohué waterfalls and the chance to visit a typical Chilean farm, sampling traditional foods, or choose to explore the town of Puerto Varas on the shores of the sprawling Lake Llanquihue. Overlooking snow-topped volcanoes, you'll stroll among the charming village's traditional German architecture and wooden buildings, a perfect prelude to a Pisco Sour evening, where you'll learn more about the iconic drink of Peru and Chile.

Day 7
Castro

Arriving in Castro today, you’ll explore the picturesque village of Dalcahue and pass through Achao, bustling with arriving boats. Then, visit the Jesuit’s Achao Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with baroque marquetry. There's also the chance to visit three of the 16 UNESCO World Heritage Site churches on the island of Chiloé, home to a collection of Jesuit-built wooden churches and houses on poles, ending with a visit to Castro’s handicraft market. Then, spend time on deck looking for dolphins swimming alongside the ship a you set sail towards the Guaitecas Archipelago.

Day 8
At sea

Today you’ve got another day to explore the delights of the ship as you venture into the Golfo de Penas – watch for whales and dolphins, a regular sight around these waters, before perhaps relaxing in one of the opulent Explorer or Panorama lounges. Come evening, indulge in such delights as Roasted Chilean Sea Bass in the opulent setting of The Restaurant.

Day 9
English Narrows & Pio Xi Glacier

This morning sees you set sail towards the English Narrows, where winding islands and channel markers narrow at one point to the width of just one ship. Enjoy lectures about the fjords’ natural history and witness the sole settlement south of the Narrows, Puerto Eden, where hundreds of bird species thrive and, further south, condors soar above the mountaintops. Then, marvel at the sprawling tidewater glacier Pio XI, boarding the Zodiacs as you duck around icecaps and broken off icebergs, witnessing house-sized chunks of ice crash from the glacier front into the ocean below, an unforgettable sight.

Day 10
Puerto Natales

Today sees you reach the spectacular White Narrows, edged with verdant outcrops, snow-topped peaks and barren rocks, and, hopefully, seals and dolphins alongside the ship. Puerto Natales is a bustling hub of activity; perhaps disembark and indulge in a beer and wine tasting as you look over striking mountain views and the spectacular Chilean fjords.

Day 11
Torres del Paine National Park

Today sees you anchor in the emblematic Torres National Park, where striking turquoise lakes lie alongside craggy glacial inlets and colossal zeniths. Hike the trails around the lagoons and waterfalls, stop for photos in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and spot roaming guanacos, Andean Condors and other wildlife. Highlights include the Salto Grande waterfall, the Torres del Paine peaks and the Nordenskjold Lake with varying hikes on offer to explore, based on fitness levels.

Day 12
White Narrows & Montañas Fjord

Leaving Puerto Natales in the morning, you’ll pass the spectacular White Narrows again as well as entering the epic Canal de las Montañas, edged by vast glaciers frozen in their cascade. Here, there's chance to head on a Zodiac cruise to get up close to the glaciers, or embark on a short hike across the mass of ice.

Day 13
Cruising the Chilean Fjords

Your final day at sea sees you sailing through the largest national park in Chile before you’re greeted with the serene magnitude of the Strait of Magellan, where penguin colonies and looming mountains vie for your attention. Then, your last stop for today is the Francisco Coloane Marine Park, where breaching humpback whales are not an unlikely sight.

Day 14
Alberto de Agostini National Park

Head to Dawson Island today, famous as the site of a prison, before you sail into Almirantazgo Sound’s glacial expanse and Ainsworth Bay, situated within Alberto De Agostini National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve filled with more epic landscapes emblematic of Patagonia. Weather dependent, you’ll then head on a Zodiac cruise to see the rugged white ice cap of the Marinelli Glacier up close as it descends from the soaring Darwin mountains, also spotting elephant seals and penguins. Then, walk among the sub-polar Magellanic forest, a verdant contrast to outside’s icy delights, dense with evergreens and deciduous trees.

Day 15
Punta Arenas

Anchoring at Punta Arenas, you'll then drive to a sheep farm and learn about rodeo techniques, sheep shearing and herding, gaining a real insight into life of a Patagonian hacienda, finishing with a BBQ lunch and a Pisco Sour. Along the way, stop to see the guanacos, Andean Condors and other wildlife that roam in this region.

Day 16
Garibaldi Fjord & Glacier

This morning, you'll sail to reach the beautiful Garibaldi Fjord within the epic landscapes of the Alberto de Agostini National Park, Chile’s third largest. Marvel at the vast Garibaldi during a Zodiac cruise where you're likely to see an enormous chunk of ice calving off from the glacial front and crash into the ocean. As you cruise among dozen of soaring waterfalls among the cliffs, expect to see the sea lion colonies, skuas, kingfishers, caracaras, vultures, and nesting Imperial Shags, among others.

Days 17-18
Depart Ushuaia to UK

After breakfast disembark Silver Explorer at Ushuaia and take your transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK, arriving on day 18.
