River cruise

Step back to the golden age of travel aboard a luxury paddle-wheeler, enjoying complimentary cocktail hours, nightly jazz performances and full-board regionally inspired dining. Then, sailing up-river, you’ll pause everywhere from historic weatherboard towns and grand plantation homes to Native American villages and Civil War sites. And, each stop is brought to life by included shore excursions. Either side, you’ll take in Memphis’s bluesy heritage and enjoy a luxury stay among New Orleans’ Creole charms.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2
UK to New Orleans

After enjoying complimentary airport-lounge access, you’ll fly out direct to New Orleans. Arriving in the early evening, you’ll be met by a private driver for the short journey to your luxury hotel, host to elegant rooms, fine restaurants and an exquisite rooftop pool. Located in the heart of the French Quarter, you’ll be perfectly positioned to explore over the next two days. And, you’ll quickly discover that the city wears its international influences on its sleeve, from the finger-licking Creole cuisine and the ornately Gothic Lafayette Cemetery to the Renaissance St. Louis Cathedral and, yes, the wrought-iron balconies of the French Quarter. Be sure to end the night in one of its foot-tapping, live-music bars.

Stay: InterContinental New Orleans (Superior)

Day 3
Embarkation in New Orleans

After some further time to explore today, you’ll be brought aboard your luxury paddle-wheeler. Beautifully dressed in white filigree and plush carpets, it’s perfectly evocative of yesteryear, not least for the impeccable service from the all-American crew. It even features the largest staterooms of any cruise ship, including full-size bathrooms, private balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows. You’ll also settle into your included full-board dining, prefixed by the daily complimentary cocktail hour. Expect the finest in regional dining, with courses spanning from Cajun-spiced scallop starters to pan-seared tenderloin mains and desserts of bourbon pecan pie.

Day 4
Oak Alley

You’ll begin your programme of complimentary shore excursions with Oak Alley. It’s one of the finest examples of antebellum architecture – a plantation home blessed with spectacular Greek-revival architecture. It’s all reached by a stroll along a quarter-mile canopy of giant oak trees, which gave the plantation its name. Then, from the hard work of the sugarcane fields to the dinner parties of the grand house, it’s all brought to life by your expert guide. Returning to your ship, perhaps play a round on the top deck’s putting green, or simply watch river life play out from one of the luxurious lounges or open-air exercise areas.

Days 5
Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, the state capital of Louisiana, was named in 1699 after a red cypress post that marked the territory of the region’s native Americans. As such, it’s home to hundreds of years of rich history, showcased on your guided tour. Highlights include 19th-century weatherboard homes and the Old State Capitol museum – 34 floors of marble and stone, housing an observation tower and an ornate Memorial Hall. You’ll also enjoy a guided visit to the Louisiana State Museum, learning about each region’s heritage before returning to the ship. As always, you’ll then be treated to the nightly jazz and musical entertainment.

Day 5
St. Francisville

Looking down on the Mississippi River below, St. Francisville is the oldest town in the Florida Parishes. Despite its modest size, your included touring here will see you between historic churches, museums and a fantastic spread of plantation homes nestled into the rolling countryside. Among these impressive is the magnificent Rosedown, home to gardens inspired by those found at the Palace of Versailles. The town also hosts a certain bohemian charm, best found in its boutiques and art galleries. Learn more back on board with your ship’s historians and naturalists.

Day 6
Natchez, Mississippi

You’ll be welcomed into the lower Mississippi River Valley by views of sprawling plantations, majestic building and intimate gardens. Not content with being the oldest civilised settlement on the Mississippi River, Natchez also boasts the most antebellum houses in the United States – 668 to be precise. Your touring here includes a visit to one of its grandest. You might also want to stop off at the Stratton Chapel Gallery, where you’ll find 100 years of Natchez history in photographs. The beautiful Trinity Episcopal Church is a further highlight, home to two rare art-glass windows designed by the famous Louis Comfort Tiffany. Yes, that Tiffany. There’s also the option of hiking in the beautifully scenic Homochitto National Forest.

Day 7

Arriving at the mouth of the Yazoo River, you’ll pause at Vicksburg. Originally settled by the French, it’s enjoyed life as a Spanish military outpost before being captured by General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. Indeed, its Old Courthouse is now a museum displaying Confederate and antebellum Americana, while the historic centre is a storybook of pre-Civil-War charm. Your included touring will also bring you to Vicksburg National Military Park. It features everything from 1,325 historic monuments and 20 miles of reconstructed trenches to a restored Union gunboat and the Vicksburg National Cemetery.

Day 8
Day on the Mississippi

With a day of cruising, you’ll have the opportunity to watch as river life plays out in front of you, perhaps with breakfast served on your private balcony. There’s also a delightful afternoon tea service, presented in the Sky Lounge, while you’ll also have plenty of time to make use of the ship’s luxury facilities, detailed previously.

Day 9
Memphis, Tennessee

You’ll end in Memphis – the birthplace of the blues. You’ll start with a visit to the bars and barbecue joints of Beale Street, before your complimentary tour passes by the site of Martin Luther King’s assassination, which is now given over the superb National Civil Rights Museum. Then, if your stop at Sun Studios, where countless seminal artists were recorded, isn’t enough, consider visiting Graceland – Elvis Presley’s city mansion. Alternatively, with the city first sited on a Chickasaw settlement, you can even visit Chucalissa – a reconstructed 15th-century Native American village.
