This eight-day cruise begins in Budapest where you'll board your luxurious river ship before setting sail along the Danube, enjoying the superb service, sightseeing and cuisine associated with an APT River Cruise.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Budapest

Depart the UK from your chosen UK airport and head to Budapest, Hungary's stunning capital city on the banks of the mighty Danube River and the starting point for your luxury APT River Cruise.

You'll be met on arrival and transferred to your river ship where you'll enjoy a welcome reception followed by the Captain's Gala Welcome Dinner.

Day 2
Budapest

After a first night on board, disembark and enjoy a tour of historic Budapest including the 500 year-old Matthias Church and St Stephen's Basilica. You'll also visit Buda Castle, a world-heritage site offering fantastic views over the twin cities of Buda and Pest. Spend some time at leisure exploring the town on your own before returning to the ship in the evening.

Day 3
Batislava, Vienna

Overnight you'll cross the border from Hungary to Slovakia where you'll enjoy a tour of the capital city Bratislava. With a wealth of forest and parkland as well as a number of fascinating historical sights such as St Martin's Cathedral, Mirbach Palace and the communist landmarks of the Radio Building and Freedom Square, this city set at the foot of the Little Carpathians is a superb place to spend a few hours.

In the afternoon you'll rejoin the ship and head to the Austrian capital Vienna, one of Europe's classical music hotspots. After dinner you may like to take an excursion to see an evening concert of Mozart or Strauss.

Day 4
Vienna

Spend today exploring Vienna with its world-famous architecture including superb examples of Baroque and Romanesque design on a guided walking tour of one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

Day 5
Durnstein, Melk

Your journey continues to the pretty town of Durnstein where you'll enjoy a walk through cobbled streets and amongst 16th century town houses as well as visit the ruined castle where Richard the Lionheart, former King of England was once held captive. You'll then head to Wachau Valley for some wine tasting before the option of a gentle bike ride along the banks of the Danube. Alternatively re-join the ship for the short cruise to Melk, one of the world's most renowned monastic sights.

Day 6
Linz, Gmunden OR Cesky Krumlov OR Salzburg

Cruise overnight to Linz, Austria's second largest city where you'll enjoy a guided tour. You'll then have a choice of three different sightseeing activities depending on your interests.

You may wish to embark on a guided excursion to the resort town of Gmunden, on the shores of Lake Traunsee in the World Heritage-listed Austrian Lake District. Alternatively, travel by coach to the beautiful city of Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart and setting for the film The Sound of Music. The tour includes several sights from the film including the Wedding Church, Mirabell Gardens and Great Salzburg Festival Hall. The final option is to embark on an trip to the World Heritage-listed city of Ceský Krumlov in the Czech Republic.

Day 7
Passau, Vilshofen

Early this morning, your ship will cruise through Upper Austria to Passau in Germany, a charming 2,000 year-old city, located at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers. Enjoy a guided walking or bicycle tour of the city, including a visit to the magnificent St Stephen's Cathedral.

In the afternoon, rejoin your ship and continue to Vilshofen, a 1,200 year-old Bavarian town located at the joining of the river Vils and the Danube. Leave the ship and enjoy an 'Oktoberfest' experience Vilshofen-style, relaxing at long tables and benches while sampling local food and beer and taking in an entertaining range of Bavarian folk music, song and dance - a superb end to a fantastic trip.

Day 8
Vilshofen, Munich

After breakfast, this morning you'll disembark your ship and transfer to the airport in Munich for your flight back to the UK.
