Day by day itinerary
UK to Budapest, Hungary
Having sailed overnight, you’ll awake in Slovakia’s capital, stepping past its forest-fringed riverbank to enjoy a walking tour of its pastel-hued Old Town. Having paused to admire the Rococo-style grandeur of the 18th-century Mirbach Palace and the Gothic spires of St Martin’s Cathedral, you’ll also have some free time to explore on you own before sailing west to Vienna. Here, after dinner, you’ll experience two of the city’s great passions with a traditional wine and music evening at a tavern on the city’s outskirts.
Experience Vienna’s timeless elegance with a choice of three excursions. The first, an expert-led city tour, takes in everything from the grand Opera House to the Imperial Palace of the Habsburg Emperors followed by a guided walk through the World Heritage-listed city centre. Alternatively, take in some of Vienna’s hidden treasures such as the Ankeruhr Clock in the Hoher Markt, or join a cycling trip along the riverbank and through the pretty Donauopark with its rose, herb and moorland gardens. Then, in the afternoon, there’s the chance to join a further bike ride, this time to the 12th-century Augustinian monastery of Klosterneuburg.
Weissenkirchen / Dürnstein / Grein
You’ll reach the Wachau Valley this morning for your next choice of tours. There’s the chance to explore Dürnstein’s winding cobblestones followed by a wine tasting, take a guided walk to the fortress where Richard the Lionheart was held to ransom, or taste delicious apricots and a selection of local sweets. Then, returning to the ship, you’ll cruise further through the spectacular Wachau Valley to visit the Benedictine Abbey in Melk to marvel at its unique collection of religious relics, from jewel-studded crosses to a priceless collection of medieval manuscripts.
After a walking tour of Passau, whose cobblestone streets are lined with an impressive array of Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture, you’ll cruise on to Vilshofen. Here, you’ll enjoy an Oktoberfest celebration complete with Bavarian beer and traditional music and dancing before your flight home on day eight. There’s also the chance to extend your trip with a three-night post-cruise stay in Munich while, for those with even more time, it’s also possible to add on a pre-cruise package in Prague, transforming this weeklong sailing into a two-week, tailor-made break.
