Here, you’ll have the chance to sample its white-whine delicacies before a stroll around Viña del Mar, a 19th-century resort city famed for its gorgeous gardens and flower clock. It’s then on to Valparaíso, the country’s oldest and most important port. A tumble of colour, its rolling hills are plied by winding laneways and historic funiculars alike, forming a postcard-perfect vision that’s long made it an artists’ retreat. Both options end in Valdivia, whose unique spread of influences ranges from Germany to Holland, remembered today in a beautiful collection of colonial architecture and its pretty riverside market. End the day tasting fish and crabs in Valdivia or with a visit to Niebla’s 17th-century fort, a Spanish vestige whose cannons still point out to sea.

Puerto Montt is your gateway to the Lake District, your scenic drive bringing you between shimmering waters and cascading waterfalls that link giant lakes. You’ll also visit a typical Chilean farm to learn of the region’s culinary and musical traditions. The rodeo – a national sport – is a particular highlight. There’s also the option for lunch in a local restaurant, a visit to a timber handicraft village and a chance to explore Puerto Varas, a pretty colonial town backdropped by a colossal volcano. Then, reboarding the ship, you’ll join the resident mixologists in the bar to learn how to create Chile’s national drink – the pisco sour.

You’ll make land on Chiloé Island with Castro and its colourful wooden houses, raised on stilts over the water. Then, ferry hops and road transfers will see you between quaint villages, black-necked swan and UNESCO-listed, 18th-century churches. In between it all, you’ll be treated to a traditional snack and musical performance in a town square. Otherwise, focus on the island’s World-Heritage sites with a visit to three churches, each resplendent in Baroque flourishes. You’ll also take in the superb Museum of Traditions and a local handicraft market. Lastly, returning to the ship, you’ll cruise along the gorgeous Guaitecas Archipelago – a hotspot for Chilean and Peale’s dolphins.

Days 11-12
English Narrows/Pío XI Glacier/White Narrows

Today you’ll be treated to one of the your route’s most scenic stretches, winding between the spectacular islands of the English Narrows. At parts, there’s room for only one vessel at a time. It’s all brought to life by lectures on the fjords’ natural history and their only settlement – Puerto Eden. And, the further south you go, the better the chance of spotting Andean condors soaring above the hills and mountains. Come the afternoon, you’ll then head out on the ship’s Zodiacs to get up close to the Pio XI Glacier – a 4.5km-wide monolith that calves off giant icebergs. The next day, you’ll cruise through the White Narrows. Here, mountains loom on either side, dappled with hardy native plants. Keep your eyes out for seals and dolphins.

Puerto Natales (Torres del Paine)

Stopping at Puerto Natales, you’ll head out to Torres del Paine – a true highlight of world travel. It’s a national-park gem spanning 242,000 hectares of lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and mountain peaks. It’s all watched over by its eponymous torres towers, reaching up as great granite spires. As you go, be sure to stay on the look out for condors and guanacos, a skinny relative to the llama. There’s also a choice of three walks and hikes, tailored to individual fitness.

Then, entering the narrow Canal de las Montañas, you’ll sail alongside the Cordillera de Sarmiento Mountains, a range troubled by cascades and no fewer than seven glaciers. Conditions permitting, you’ll explore by Zodiac or short hike. The next day, you’ll sail among the giant peaks and cragged lowlands of Chile’s largest national park – Bernardo O'Higgins – before continuing through the Strait of Magellan. With mountains looming on both sides, you’ll head right through the Francisco Coloane Marine Park, a favourite among humpback whales.

Depending on conditions, you’ll head out on a Zodiac cruise to see the Marinelli Glacier and the Darwin Mountain Range. It’s the chance to appreciate how the land returns to life after glacial retreat, with walks in the sub-polar Magellanic forest bringing you among evergreens and deciduous trees alike. The bay also promises a high chance of spotting southern elephant seals, while nearby Tucker Island is famous for its Magellanic penguins.

This being Chile, it’s all wrapped up in a hearty barbecue lunch, complemented by empanada pastries and washed down with a pisco sour.
