Location
Bagan – alongside Angkor Wat – is Asia’s most important archaeological site. 2,200 temples, stupas and pagodas form an ancient city that dates back to the 9th century. As yet unblighted by package tourism, it’s the perfect opportunity to step back in time as you travel dusty laneways to reach delicate spires and colossal iconography that peaks out over the plain forest. And this traditional gem is poised to explore it all, set at the very walls of Old Bagan, opposite the ruined gate of the same name. You’ll also have some of the region’s most impressive temples as neighbours with the 12th century golden dome and white walls of Ananda just next door.
Accommodation
Built in a traditional Burmese style, Tharabar mirrors Bagan’s intricate Indic architecture in its fine stonework and timber detailing. Across all accommodation, you’ll find teak floors the host to rich wood furniture while high ceilings make for spacious stays. Try for a room with a terrace that looks out over the hotel’s verdant grounds. Upgrade to a suite for carved four-poster beds and pagoda views. Whatever your choice, satellite TVs, complimentary water, individually controlled air-conditioning and tea and coffee making facilities round off the in-room amenities.
Dining
At Tharabar Gate you’ll be treated to a range of Western favourites and Burmese delights. Think richly flavoured curries, spicy salads and noodle broths that combine Indian indulgence with South East Asian flavours. You’ll also have the choice between dining in the charming, timber restaurant or al fresco, by the pool. Wash it all down with a famous Myanmar beer or a vintage sourced from the vineyards of the country’s Inle Lake. There’s also a selection of restaurants nearby including the excellent – but oddly named – Be Kind to Animals, a vegetarian restaurant of some renown.
Facilities
Whether you’re enjoying an espresso in the café, sipping on a cocktail in the bar or relaxing by the pool, a 24-hour room butler service epitomises the hotel’s commitment to service. You’ll also be treated to a full-service spa complete with Jacuzzi and body treatments that range from aromatherapy and beauty treatments to massages and oil therapies. It’s the perfect way to relax after a horse-pulled carriage tour of Bagan or a lazy cruise down the Irrawaddy. The hotel will also often put on traditional dances and musical performances to accompany your evening activities.
