Location
Two kilometres from Madeira’s largest city, Funchal, the Cliff Bay enjoys an ideal combination of seclusion and accessibility. In fact, it enjoys pride of place on a jutting promontory, featuring direct access to the seafront promenade and the island’s famous glittering waters that stretch endlessly to the horizon. It’s all wrapped up in tropical gardens where century-old palm trees and a dramatic cliff face provide plenty of opportunity for some quiet relaxation. You’ll also have all of Madeira’s highlights on your doorstep, from idyllic walks to boat cruises.
Accommodation
The rooms’ delightfully contemporary style is perfectly complemented by a light and airy disposition. It’s all imparted by oversize picture windows that welcome in views over the gardens, nearby harbour or Atlantic Ocean. It’s a sight best taken in with a private balcony. The Top Floor and Suites categories are particularly impressive, featuring an indulgent range of services from wine served on arrival and a pillow menu to fresh flowers, juices and fruit. You’ll even enjoy an exclusive à la carte breakfast at the superb Il Gallo D’Oro restaurant, fully detailed below.
Dining
Perhaps the hotel’s most impressive feature is Il Gallo D’Oro, a gourmet restaurant whose indulgent fine dining has been awarded with two Michelin stars. Blending Mediterranean cadences with Iberian flavours, chef Benoît Sinthon showcases fresh produce sourced from across the island. The Cliff Bay also features a range of further dining experiences, including daily themed buffets at the Rose Garden; traditional Portuguese classics and seafood favourites rank among the highlights. If you’d rather something light, the Blue Lagoon is ideal for some poolside snacks and lunch while there’s also a bistro that serves afternoon tea. Indulge with homemade scones, mini sandwiches and aromatic teas on the terrace, backdropped by violinist accompaniment.
Facilities
Combining the welcoming service of a luxury hotel with a full complement of resort facilities, there’s something for everyone at the Cliff Bay. The three pool iterations are particularly impressive, including an outdoor seawater offering. Further relaxation can be found in the library, beauty salon, collection of Jacuzzis and superb sauna-equipped spa. If you’d rather something more active, perhaps make use of the tennis court, gym, billiards room or table tennis tables. And, at day’s end, you can always enjoy a nightcap at one of the bars.
