Riad Farnatchi, Marrakech

This exceptional riad brings the popular Marrakech custom of hiding yourself away in walled courtyard houses fervently into the 21st century.

Sitting deep in the medina and first conceived as a private residence, the hotel is made from three medina houses and divided into just nine suites, each uniquely decorated, noticeably modern yet undeniably Moroccan. Features include hand-made beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, air-conditioning, Bose iPod docks, Wi-Fi and sumptuous interiors.

Breakfast can either be taken in your suite, in one of the two dining rooms or on the rooftop terrace. The riad can also arrange candlelit dinners or barbecues.

A traditional hamman is available to guests and, unlike at most riads, there's even an outdoor pool, which is heated in the winter months.
