The Jabiru Safari Lodge is just over an hour’s drive inland from Cairns. Situated on a 5,000-acre wildlife refuge and wetlands reserve on the northern edge of Cairns Highlands, the area’s unique topography features open savannah woodland, grassland and freshwater wetlands. As such, the area, also known as the Atherton Tablelands, plays host to a range of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, emus and 222 species of birds.
Lodging comes in the form of deluxe African-style safari cabins with lagoon views. With an authentic canvas construction, each en suite tent is appointed with lights, insect screens, a fridge and a fan. The timber floors, furniture and soft beds all contribute to an experienced far removed from traditional camping. All cabins come with large decks that overlook Clancy’s Lagoon – perfect for bird watching, reading or enjoying a class of champagne with the sunset.
All meals are included in the nightly tariff and there’s a café at the lodge’s wildlife centre that sells food and beverages. Alternatively, you can elect to go for a bed and breakfast package where your morning meals are taken in the hosts’ home. All food is prepared with fresh, local ingredients and is home-cooked and generously portioned. For a different pace, make use of the barbecue packs on sale and enjoy an Australian tradition in the comfort of your own accommodation.
Jabiru Safari Lodge is set up to take full advantage of its prime location. Whether it’s bird watching from the heated spa Jacuzzi or taking to the waters in a canoe, guests have unbridled access to the wetland’s rich habitats. Open safari vehicles let guests explore at a leisurely pace while the sunset safari on the lagoon capitalises on the whisper-motor of its boat to get as close as possible to water-birds. Or, simply hole up in a hide with commanding views complemented by a glass of wine and cheese spread.
