Home-from-home hospitality and traditional Balearic charm framed by stunning Mediterranean views

Opened in 1947 and run by the Peña Gayà family for three generations, this traditional seaside hotel is perched above a secluded bay on Mallorca’s southwest coast. Protected from the northerly winds by its Tramuntana Mountain backdrop, it’s a superb spot for soaking up the Spanish sunshine, while the history, culture and culinary offerings of the Balearics’ capital, Palma, are just a short drive away. It’s worth noting that a quiet road separates runs between the front of the hotel and the beach.
Starting out with just two simple rooms, the hotel has grown from its humble, post-war origins to today’s modern, five-storey building. Accommodation, comprising 94 rooms, most with sea views, cleverly blends the traditional – parquet flooring, four-poster beds and richly patterned fabrics –with the modern – air conditioning, WiFi and flat screen TVs. It’s all spread across the four, balconied upper floors to take full advantage of those uninterrupted, Mediterranean panoramas.
The food at Cala Fornells is a real highlight. From the fresh fruit, sweet pastries and cold meats served daily at breakfast to the imaginative à la carte offerings at dinner – think freshly caught bream, spicy sobrassada sausage and traditional ensaïmada cake – it’s all seasonal and, where possible, locally sourced.
Despite its small size, this boutique hotel has the facilities of a far larger resort. If you can tear yourself away from the beach – towel service, sun shades and loungers are all provided – there are indoor and outdoor pools to enjoy along with a tennis court, fitness centre, massage room, Jacuzzi and billiards table. The hotel is also well placed for nearby cycling trails, walking routes and no less than five golf courses.
