Location
Heading north of Brisbane along past the Sunshine Coast will bring you to the long sandy beaches and blue ocean of Hervey Bay. The subtropical paradise of Fraser Island (a short boat’s ride from the bay) shelters the coast meaning waters as calm and welcoming as the unpretentious local community. As the name suggests, the hotel has a waterfront location on a wildlife lake. Here you can feed turtles or sit back and watch as the myriad of birdlife go about their daily business.
Accommodation
At Alexander Lakeside, you’ll have the difficult decision between taking a Lakeview or a Sunrise Suite. Self-contained, the suites afford plenty of space to spread out and private balconies that look onto either the lake’s wildlife or the manicured gardens. Comfortable furnishings are complemented by free wireless internet, queen-sized beds and flat screen TVs.
Dining
Prices include a daily continental breakfast delivered fresh to your room and, in the evening, guests are treated to port and chocolates – a great way to unwind on your deck. Complimentary tea is served in the afternoon while seafood, cheese or barbecue platters can be ordered on prior request. For lunch and dinner, head into Hervey Bay where you’ll find an excellent selection of restaurants, waterfront cafés and small bistros. Unsurprisingly, seafood is a particular specialty while there are also several excellent pan-Asian eateries.
Facilities
Sharon and John Lagan treat guests like family and friends. An avid 4WD enthusiast, John is happy to offer his advice on traversing Fraser Island while the B&B is dotted with Sharon’s folk art and patchwork. Sharon also puts on ‘Lakeside Quilting’ sessions where guests can learn her art.
