South Africa Kruger Safari
The modern metropolis of Johannesburg is an ideal starting point
for your visit to South Africa, and the gateway to the region’s
many game viewing destinations including Kruger National Park.
Kruger is one of
the biggest and most famous wildlife parks in the world and as with
the other reserves shown here offers excellent opportunities for
‘Big Five’ game viewing.
If you’re including a trip on Rovos Rail or the Blue Train it’s
only an hour to Pretoria. From there you can enjoy a luxury rail
journey to a host of destinations including Cape Town, Durban and
Victoria Falls.
You may need to stay in Johannesburg overnight before your safari
and we would be happy to arrange accommodation at Johannesburg
airport or in the surrounding suburbs.
‘The Big Five’ are Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo
all of which can be found in the Kruger National Park and
surrounding game reserves.
WHEN TO GO
Weather
Warm all year.
Festivals
South Africa stages festivals throughout the
year, with something for everyone. Food festivals include the
Prickly Pear Festival in February/March in the Eastern Cape, and
Lambert’s Bay Kreeffees in Cape Town in March. Music festivals
include the Origin Festival in the Western Cape in January, a
trance event, the FNB Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg in February,
and Oppikoppi is held in the bushveld in the north in August and is
South Africa’s Glastonbury. The gay Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is
held in Knysna in the Western Cape in May.
HIGHLIGHTS
Cape Town
Lying at the foot of flat-topped Table
Mountain is this beautiful seaside city. Views of the city can be
had by taking the cable car ride to the top of the mountain, but be
sure to do so on a cloud free day. The Victoria And Alfred
Waterfront is where it all happens - there’s free entertainment,
shops, museums, an aquarium, bars and restaurants. Boat trips can
be taken from here to Robben Island, the prison where Nelson
Mandela was held.
Excursions from here can be taken to the wine-tasting country
north of the city in towns such as Stellenbosch, while the
adventurous should head to the Blaukrans River for a bungee jump:
at 216 metres, it is twice the height of the one at Victoria Falls.
They can also go shark-cage diving with Great Whites on the
Cape.
The Garden
Route
The route along the south coast takes its name from the days
when it was heavily forested. Some hardwood forest remains after
development, but the beauty is still there. Excellent beaches,
watersports, birdwatching in the wilderness ad nature reserves for
dolphins and primates make for a wonderful holiday destination. The
Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train runs the route between George and
Knysna.
Kruger National
Park
A reserve the size of Wales and a great place to spot the Big
Five and many other species, with accommodation for all needs from
luxury cottages to campsite enclosures. This is one of Africa’s top
game parks.
